What Rush should I buy first?

aquagoat - 27-5-2006 at 08:42

I'd say:

and perhaps:

Ah thank you!
There's a nice new little second hand shop nearby selling a lot of Rush records... nearly bought one yesterday...

aquagoat - 27-5-2006 at 11:05

you should listen to them first, cause I'm not a Rush fan, so I answered from memory, maybe you should wait until Gojira speaks, he surely knows more about them than I.

How much do they sell them at you shop ? Cause you can have them new for 5€ at amazon France (+ shipping= 2,5€).

http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000001ESL/qid=1148724232/sr=...

I think I'm gonna buy some of them too, soon. So if you buy one, tell me what you think of it, please.

Pappawas1975 - 27-5-2006 at 12:53

I am a big fan of Rush, I particularly like their cheesy 80s stuf, but thats not to everyones tastes......I would recommend these though...

EXIT STAGE LEFT
....Ok, its a live album, but a GREAT live album, and features some of their best work from their late 70s albums. full of energy and great playing.

MOVING PICTURES
....Before they went totally Synth, this is a great album, one of their best studio albums IMO.

2112
...I think this is a little overrated, but its a classic nonetheless.

The bottom line is, soak up the recommendations and make your own choice! You cant really go wrong with anything pre 1982 IMO.....albums to avoid though are Test For Echo, Caress Of Steel and their first self titled album ( because Neil Peart isnt on it! )....they are good in their own right, but they are maybe ones to pick up at a later date, should you want to....
Personal faves, seeing as Im here, are Counterparts, Presto, Hold Your Fire, Fly By Night and Power Windows

Im planning a Rush special, maybe on July 1st, so that might give you an insight into some of their other records.....

SORRY FOR THE LONG WINDED REPLY!!!!

BBP - 27-5-2006 at 17:01

Cool! Thank you very much Gojira!

Pappawas1975 - 27-5-2006 at 18:02

They are all great musicians, but seeing them live was akin to watching a DVD. They are almost too clinical and precise, and the crowd just sat there tapping their feet. If you were in the first few rows, it would be fine, but from where I was, it kinda sucked. An enjoyable show, dont get me wrong, but give me an all standing venue with more atmosphere anyday....

Anyone know that South Park Movie soundtrack? Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee, along with Terrance and Philip, performed a hilarious rendition of the Canadian national anthem there.

PS Aqua: Rush CDs sell for anything between 9 and 29 euros, vinyl is usually cheaper.

I love that soundtrack!
I also love the Chef Aid album: Primus, Ozzy, Ween, Rancid, Joe Strummer, Cartman doing a Styx cover... :rsvd:

BBP - 29-5-2006 at 13:46

That Styx cover is great... I also love the Chef songs, they're amazing!

BBP - 6-6-2006 at 18:16

Got Moving Pictures today and got to listen to the first 3 tracks... YYZ is COOOOOL!
Not too sure about Geddy's singing voice, but hey, it took time before I got used to Les Claypool, so...

Yeah, Lee's voice is a bit whining. I listened to a few songs the other day, didn't them too much, I don't know, I'll have to give it another listen.

BBP - 7-6-2006 at 10:20

You know that guy from Violent Femmes? He's horrible.

Just discovered Primus opens their first album, Suck on This, with a rendition of YYZ. Frizzle Fry opens with a sample of that recording

Pappawas1975 - 7-6-2006 at 14:40

I noticed that too, having just got Frizzle again...Sounds like them possibly doing it live rather than a sample though? I dunno tho...

BBP - 7-6-2006 at 15:32

They did it live on Suck on This. Suck On This opens in exactly the same way, that's the joke. So that long-time fans who bought SOT in 1989, listened to it, then got Frizzle Fry, would think "Hey, it's the same record!"
YYZ on SOT lasts longer than that. Up to but not including the cool little melodious lines, there the song transforms into John the Fisherman.

Puptent - 7-6-2006 at 17:48

Geddy Lee's singing is an acquired taste for sure, took me a while to get used to it as well. I like that live album "Exit Stage Left" a lot too, good selection of some of their best tunes. "Hemispheres" is another nice record.

Pavement once wrote a hilarious tune that features the lyrics "What about the voice of Geddy Lee, how did it get so high? I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy...".

:puzzled: I've had SOT for years and I didn't even know that, I thought it was the way they started John the fisherman live but they didn't record it that way on Frizzle fry.

Pappawas1975 - 8-6-2006 at 10:13

Alot of people love Rush music but hate Geddys vocals. I never really noticed it, I kinda just went with em from the get go......Glad yr digging on Moving Pics tho BB.....

BBP - 31-7-2006 at 20:33

Just got 2112... Well Goj, you made a convert. Congratz!
Hope ye like this ducky!

Pappawas1975 - 1-8-2006 at 10:40

Ha! Nice one BB, glad you enjoy...

scallopino - 3-8-2006 at 09:32

BBP, can you do one of Neil Peart? Possibly named... Teal Peart? Neil Pelican?

BBP - 3-8-2006 at 10:28

Sure! :drums:

BBP - 3-8-2006 at 21:07

Voilà!

scallopino - 4-8-2006 at 09:36

BBP - 4-8-2006 at 10:41

Ha! Lovely!

polydigm - 9-8-2006 at 02:10

How come I'd never heard of Rush until at the age of 49 I came to the Zappa forum?

BBP - 9-8-2006 at 11:22

Don't know. If it weren't for Primus I may not have heard of them... Perhaps it's geographical.

aquagoat - 9-8-2006 at 19:08

Hey bonny, could you try to draw someone for real, I mean not a duck version of somebody but a rendition as accurate as possible ? I'd like to see what it would look like.:)

scallopino - 10-8-2006 at 07:24

But not a realistic rendition of a cartoon duck ;)

BBP - 10-8-2006 at 11:43

Ever shown you my Frank? It's messed up by the scanner, like most of the stuff I made in pencil, but anyway:

aquagoat - 11-8-2006 at 07:55

Yes, I've already seen that Zappa of yours, but I meant something new, something never seen before.:)

BBP - 11-8-2006 at 16:02

I still have some FZs and some Steve Vais lying around here... I once attempted to scan one Vai picture that came out particularly well but it messed up too badly...

punknaynowned - 3-9-2006 at 12:21

I saw Rush in 1985, Power Windows. not a very good album but I liked the trees, la villa strangiata. Still like their album hemispheres. Blue Oyster Cult opened for them and played Godzilla in addition to a rather nice Doors medley. But that was a long time ago and I haven't listened to them since. I like much of Peart's lyrics, Lifeson's a good guitar player, especially 20 years ago -- gosh they're still doing that? phew! Their earlier song Workingman I still like.

BBP - 30-9-2006 at 19:45

Is it true Rush is coming with a new album? Read that on Dutch teletext today...

Badchild - 12-9-2008 at 13:47

what does RUSH -A canadian Band by the way- have to do with Primus???

BBP - 12-9-2008 at 14:35

Les Claypool is a MASSIVE Rush fan. "If you told me I would be playing with Geddy Lee, I'd have shit a tomato."
John The Fisherman on Suck On This opens with the YYZ morse part. This was re-released on Frizzle Fry (presumably so that unsuspecting players would think "WHAT THE HELL! It's the same as Suck On This!" before they burst into To Defy The Laws Of Tradition).

Badchild - 15-9-2008 at 10:09

qUIZZ: What does YYZ mean?

BBP - 15-9-2008 at 12:53

It was the code of some airport...?

Badchild - 15-9-2008 at 14:54

which one ??

BBP - 15-9-2008 at 16:31

I'd have to look that up... I'm not familiar with foreign airports.

Badchild - 15-9-2008 at 17:00

Where do the members of RUSH hail from???

BBP - 16-9-2008 at 14:14

Oh, Canada, our home and native land... I think you said that on the previous page.

Badchild - 17-9-2008 at 07:44

YYZ is in fact the Airport Code for the Lester B. Pearson Airport in Toronto Canada. Home base of the group RUSH. YYZ is also an alternative artist gallery and COOP in Toronto.

Huck_Phlem - 20-10-2008 at 04:43

I am late to the thread but I like Hemispheres the best of all their albums. I think of Geddy's voice as if he were a woman people would love it. A lot of people don't like Derrek Shulman's voice from Gentle Giant either so..

BBP - 20-10-2008 at 16:05

Hmmm... there's a distinct difference between men's voices and women's voices. Women have more hiss in their voice than men.
(or so I was taught by my language teacher, who wanted t illustrate one example of difference between male and female voices (in Hz) by asking a boy and a girl from my group to day something. Unfortunately he asked the wrong people: a guy with a squeaky voice and a girl with a deep voice)

Geddy Lee has a voice you may need to learn to listen to, not necessarily love/hate.
