Need help from French speaker

BBP - 12-8-2010 at 18:41

Aqua? Badchild? Are you out there?

I've started on a lengthy project creating the script of Gabriel Knight 3. There is a section of which I cannot make out what is being said, for three reasons:
I'm not a native French speaker
The actress saying the lines is not a native French speaker, but an American with a different accent I'm not familiar with
The conversation happens through a door.

The character, Madeline, is talking to somebody about the two dead men she found with her tour group. They were found at the local landmark Le Fauteuil du Diable, with their throats cut and blood drained.

It is all Chinese to me, i hope you can forgive me that I cannot help you out.

BBP - 25-8-2010 at 07:51

A very nice French speaker has helped me out. I'd never have picked THAT out.

aquagoat - 25-8-2010 at 17:29

ha, shit, I'm late, you don't need my help anymore. Why haven't I seen this topic before ?:puzzled:

You could always check to see if he's correct... :) I'm not sure about the first line (porte arrière), since I cannot place that in the game context and I cannot hear the words even now that I know them.

aquagoat - 25-8-2010 at 20:59

Here's what she says:

"Oui, (name of the character) à l'appareil

translation:

"Yes, Miss ?????? speaking.
Two men were killed near Renne le Chateau.
No, I didn't know them.
I found the bodies with my tourist group.
No, I couldn't stay there, but I'll go back as soon as I can.
Their throats were slit.
No, I didn't see any traces of blood.
I have no idea.
Really no idea.
Ok, it's ok.
Goodbye."

Buthane! That's it!

Thank you so much! I can update my script and homepage now!
If you're in for a laugh, here's another scene from the game with an American speaker in a bad attempt to talk French:

Fortunately it's both subtitled, and translated in the game, so I know what he says. I was so peeved off with this guy's acting performance I could not believe who was behind it: Gregg Berger, who played Cornfed in Duckman.

Huck_Phlem - 29-8-2010 at 04:13

so you only got one speaker? I usually buy them in pairs.

I'm translating that little book now. At times I can't believe my own translation, that I think: "they can't be serious, can they?" You know, 1940's: "if he beats you up every day, it's your fault". On the other and there's also sound advice, like "don't talk about having babies together on your first date".
I'm now in the jealousy chapter. Apparently if you're sure that your husband's cheating on you:
Quote:

Sûre de votre fortune, pas de jérémiades ni de pleurs furtifs. Ne soyez pas alors humbe, faible et méprisable, mais violente, de la violence même de votre amour dont il doit sentir, à cette minute, tout le prix fini.

When it suggests counter-attacks, it speaks of changing your hair-cut and buying a new hat as reprisals.

So I've reached the Blue Land and am utterly rendered speechless: without knowing what it was about I'd never have guessed it from the text itself.
Enjoy playing truant yourself:
Quote:

And now I've reached the femininity chapter, and from what it looks like, I should be real happy that these days are over: apparently being equal to men results in less love.
Quote:

aquagoat - 28-10-2013 at 08:30

I'm not quite sure these days are really over, a lot of people still think that way, there's still a lot of work to do.

BBP - 28-10-2013 at 21:38

That's true, according to the UN women worldwide do 60% of the work and get 10% of the world's salary. It's very hard to get a job when you're a woman over 25, even here. People do see you as a time-bomb who can have kids any moment and cost the company money.

Mij - 24-12-2014 at 00:38

I can't see how this Humanity will ever evolve without giving women equal pay for equal work.
If I was a woman, I'd be a lesbian for sure. I wouldn't have to deal with taht man's crap. Not to mention sex without getting pregnant.
It amazes me that only 10-12% of women are.:umm:

BBP - 24-12-2014 at 12:02

Peer pressure among women is awful. Most women wear make-up and fashionable clothing because other women tell them to do so.

Nah. I'm happy I'm straight.

So you're writing all men off including yourself. That's a massively broad brush stroke.

That's a bit of man's crap - sex without consequences.

Largely, being gay is not a matter of choice. Yes, there are exceptions, but mostly, people find themselves physically attracted to what they are attracted to on a level below any kind of rationality, so that's another example of man's crap.

BBP - 4-1-2015 at 20:28

I have to admit - reading Plook's thread and the way they write in there about sex with women - that shocks me. Bedroom stuff is for bedroom only and the thought nauseates me that that one bf I had might have talked about me in similar fashion.

polydigm - 5-1-2015 at 00:22

I'm with you Bonny. Sharing sex stories is rather puerile and insensitive.

BBP - 9-1-2015 at 20:55

And now Galoot is starting, dear g...
