James - 3-10-2005 at 15:48

Yeah Bozzio was good but so was Vinnie Collieuta (sp?)

Pappawas1975 - 3-10-2005 at 18:13

Technically, it has to be Vinnie...the guy is INHUMAN....TB a close second though, saw him earlier this year playing with FANTOMAS and he was incredible....and, like the Zappas music, thats not easy shit to play either..

:drums: oh yeah the little skinny drummer , terry ted bozio takes some beating:drums:

but did zappa ever have any duff drummers?
:band:

well, Jimmy carl Black was technically not all that great, but what a legend anyway!

wazoodust - 10-10-2005 at 14:32

Zoot horn rollo (from magic band) called him "the ringo star from the mothers".
He's ok, just nothing special compared to other amazing drummers frank had.

Pappawas1975 - 11-10-2005 at 11:13

Well, thats it. Ringo wasnt that good but was essential to the Beatles sound and feel, so there ya go.....Imagine early Mothers with Colauita style freak outs!!!!!

Isis - 27-10-2005 at 00:55

Jimmy Carl Black is even more bitter than a pint of pure Guinness. And that's saying something.

My favourite drummer has to be Terry Bozzio, if only for the amazing charisma and intensity the chap had. Listen to Zappa In New York for chrissakes!

Close runner up is Chad Wackerman. His playing on The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life speaks for itself.

Penis - 27-10-2005 at 08:05

Flo Mounier

Isis - 27-10-2005 at 11:16

Favourite Zappa drummer, Marrik.

Penis - 27-10-2005 at 14:15

Terry.

Puptent - 3-11-2005 at 00:56

I really like Ralph Humphrey's playing, too bad he isn't on many official FZ albums.

scallopino - 24-11-2005 at 04:21

scallopino - 24-11-2005 at 04:30

Steve Gadd (yes, the same mentioned in 'A Little Green Rosetta')
Vinnie
Dave Weckl
Virgil (he wrote ok poetry, but not many people know of his drumming prowess)
Terry
Andrew Gander
Matt Cameron
Brad Wilk (from Rage Against The Machine)
Tony Williams
Billy Hart
Buddy
Steve Smith
Lord Voldemort
Herb
Travis Barker (i hate to admit it, but if I were a punk, Travis is the punk i would be)

scallopino - 24-11-2005 at 04:32

Oh, and i love Jeff Porcaro, whom Vinnie is very much alike.

Pappawas1975 - 24-11-2005 at 10:04

Joey Baron anyone?.....That guy kills too....

Puptent - 24-11-2005 at 12:34

I thought this topic was favorite Zappa drummer only? Aw, fuck it...

I like the usual suspects: Billy Cobham, Jack DeJohnette, Elvin Jones, Max Roach, Tony Williams, Art Blakey, Idris Muhammad, Dannie Richmond, Mitch Mitchell, Bill Bruford, Stewart Copeland, every FZ drummer except JCB, etc.

Joey Baron is indeed awesome.

Ok, i just realised what section this is in...

I would have to say that Vinnie is my favourite drummer who has played with FZ, but Bozzio is definately better suited to FZ. Vinnie is (or was) a little outrageously virtuosic.

And also Chester, who can't be faulted in any way.

I also feel sorry for Aynsley, who was unlucky to be followed by such immensely gifted players.

PS. I don't know if virtuosic is a word.

Puptent - 24-11-2005 at 15:20

I dig Aynsley's playing a lot, especially on the Waka and Wazoo albums. I do realize that he doesn't have monster chops like most of the other FZ drummers, but I really like his 'feel' and timing. Dig that drum break in "Waka/Jawaka" where it almost sounds like he's stumbling over the kit, but in a good way. ;)

FZ did praise him in interviews a lot, even years after he left the band.

BBP - 24-11-2005 at 15:40

Terry! He was great with Solodrums in Concert in 2003... if I hadn't seen him dropping his stick I'd never noticed. And the way he dealt with an annoying Zappa-fan who kept on yelling for Black Page, saying sotto voce "OK if you'll SHUT UP!", which earned him a major ovation from the crowd.

I'm just imagining him saying that in his particular voice and i'm laughing because of it.

Pappawas1975 - 25-11-2005 at 10:09

Yeah, props to Aynsley too....Alot of thetime,"rock"drummers dont get the credit they deserve over the likes of Weckl / Colauita etc......So, while we on ther subject here are a few - Dave Lombardo, Pete Sandoval, Chris Reifert, Wil Calhoun, Neil Peart, Eric Singer..........Fuck it, Ill be here forever, you get the gist......

scallopino - 26-11-2005 at 14:39

Did you know Wil Calhoun played with Wayne Shorter for a while?

Puptent - 26-11-2005 at 14:54

I've seen Calhoun with Pharoah Sanders last year, the guy can definitely play bebop as well.

The current drummer in the Wayne Shorter quartet, Brian Blade, is also a great player.

Pappawas1975 - 26-11-2005 at 20:17

No, I didnt know he played with WS....doesnt surprise me though, the guy is incredible...Have seen him with Living Colour 3 times, and every time he just killed.....they all did actually...

StudebakerHoch - 7-12-2005 at 04:23

No love for Aynsley Dunbar????

scallopino - 7-12-2005 at 14:10

No no, there is.

Pappawas1975 - 7-12-2005 at 16:28

Yes there is....Especially his role in Uncle Meat.....Oh, and of course his playing is great....

Bogus_Pimp - 12-12-2005 at 12:23

My choice would be Vinnie Colaiuta - closely followed by that groovy fella Aynsley Dunbar.

babysnakebatter - 30-12-2005 at 03:20

Skinny little Terry "Ted" Bozzio

That's Meeeeee! Awesome drummer.

scallopino - 2-1-2006 at 08:48

Yeah. After watching Baby Snakes again the other day, Terry was just so perfect for Frank in a lot of ways. He could do anything.

BBP - 24-1-2006 at 16:31

Just wondering if I'd shown anyone these...

scallopino - 25-1-2006 at 02:37

Nice. How crazy is his set-up!!! But it's all there for a reason.

Did you like the show? Could you stay interested listening to solo drums for a whole show? If so, great.

Pappawas1975 - 25-1-2006 at 12:39

I saw Terry with Fantomas last year, using that mad 1000 odd piece set up. Incredible player.....

BBP - 25-1-2006 at 14:01

Terry was just fantastic... blew my mind, really. Ufuk was terrific, and the Black Page was great.
