OFFERING - My Radio Show

BBP - 18-12-2005 at 00:04

I hope so... Jobs are terribly hard to get right now... and I don't want to do newspaper rounds for the rest of my life, though it's fun work...

Pappawas1975 - 18-12-2005 at 00:06

No, guess not....As long as you have a skill, then its all good. Even if you dont, good jobs are out there still.....At least you are prepared to work, unlike alot of people, but lets not get too topical here!

Puptent - 18-12-2005 at 00:07

I work at an ISP, doing application and web programming and stuff.. I have a masters degree in Information Sciences, so it's actually a bit below my education level, but as a starter on the job market, I guess it's pretty ok.

Sometimes I get a bit annoyed with spending 8+ hours behind the computer though. At least I get lots of time to spend on Zappa.com and PG every day. :D

BBP - 18-12-2005 at 00:07

Or off-topical... (drum fill) I'd like to be a composer, which is why I'm studying musicology... but then I'd be entirely on the starvation level.

Puptent - 18-12-2005 at 00:10

Woudn't you increase your chances by studying composition at a conservatory, then?

Anyway, we're really going off-topic here. I enjoy the Zappa stuff a lot anyway, Village of the Sun rocks.

BBP - 18-12-2005 at 00:12

Probably... but I don't play piano well enough for that...

VOTS is great... I missed it so much when I couldn't play Roxy anymore...

Puptent - 18-12-2005 at 00:15

Ah, Grand Wazoo.. one of my faves. :)

Pappawas1975 - 18-12-2005 at 00:22

As an ex musician for 15 years, I recommend you do not venture into the industry to make a living, as it is tough! I had fun though, but as far as survival goes, it was great for half a year, then the money wouldnt be as hot for the next half and so on and so forth......Too up and down. Id stick with the computer stuff, or whatever you want to do, and if anything happens with your music its a bonus....

BBP - 18-12-2005 at 00:25

Thanks Goj... good advice. I once encountered this weird man in the bus, he told me he had been a composer, but couldn't live out of it, so he'd become a priest instead.

Pappawas1975 - 18-12-2005 at 00:26

Well now, theres a career change.......just think it over....

BBP - 18-12-2005 at 00:30

It wasn't exactly the direction in which I tended to end... There's some 800 composers in Holland, which is A Lot. And I don't think my Argh III stands from the crowd...

Pappawas1975 - 18-12-2005 at 00:33

Its all about dedication and commitment and belief. You get to a point where enough is enough though. I did. I was only it for the touring though, which was amazing....saw alot of the world and did things I wouldnt have done had I not been in bands.....Just keep going for it is the best thing to do really....

BBP - 18-12-2005 at 00:35

That's the crux, I think... I always considered myself devoted to music, but now I study this, I discover I'm not all that hard-core melomaniac-and-loving-it some of my fellow-students are displaying...

Puptent - 18-12-2005 at 00:38

It 'll all work out in the end anyway. Most people I know ended up doing something that isn't related to their education at all, might be fun anyway.

I'm a decent musician and can play in various styles and made a couple of records and demos in bands, but compared with virtuoso kids who play Rachmaninov's third piano concert when they're 10 years old, I pretty much suck. That killed off my aspirations as a serious musician early on.. :-D

Beefheart! Kick ass.

BBP - 18-12-2005 at 00:39

What do you play Pup?

Pappawas1975 - 18-12-2005 at 00:40

Do what you enjoy and take shit from anyone, thats the bottom line. If success comes, its all good, if not, dont have any regrets at the end of the journey......

BBP - 18-12-2005 at 00:41

Thanks again, Goj...

BBP - 18-12-2005 at 00:43

Yay! Ship!

Pappawas1975 - 18-12-2005 at 00:43

Think Im gonna fly people! Glad you enjoyed the show, hope you tune in again even if its not a Zappa special! Appreciate you listening. Will no doubt bump into you all soon!

Puptent - 18-12-2005 at 00:43

Piano is my main instrument (and various keys related instruments, like Hammond organ, Rhodes piano, Hohner Clavinet), but I'm mostly a jazz and rock player. I do practice some classical music to keep up my technique occasionally, struggling through some of Chopin's piano etudes and stuff...

BBP - 18-12-2005 at 00:44

Bye! Thanks for giving me a lovely time!

Puptent - 18-12-2005 at 00:45

Thanks for another cool show, Gojira!

BBP - 18-12-2005 at 00:45

Really Pup?
Im currently wrestling my way through one of Chopin's waltzes... op 64/2 I think, number 7... Very famous, I have 7 different recordings of it. And all of them suck.

Pappawas1975 - 18-12-2005 at 00:46

No problems, my absolute pleasure...rock on peoples.....speak to u both soon, no doubt......

Puptent - 18-12-2005 at 01:01

Hmm, there's some paranormal show on right now, "Talking with ghosts" and stuff. I'm gonna play a cd.

Pappawas1975 - 18-12-2005 at 15:41

I think that was a good move, Puptent.

BBP - 4-2-2006 at 23:05

ICRFM is awfully silent right now...

Pappawas1975 - 4-2-2006 at 23:36

Yes. In A Silent Way. You can thank Studebaker for that gag......Please e-mail - info@icrfm.co.uk , and complain! I am dedicated to doing my shows and shit like this happens....Always when I have youre good selves listening, and wanting to listen to some good music. Its not on.........

BBP - 5-2-2006 at 13:38

Alternatively you could call it a "tribute to John Cage", or "a continuous playing of "The Misinterpretation Of Silence And Its Disastrous Consequences".
Oh well. Better luck next week!

Pappawas1975 - 5-2-2006 at 14:51

Ha! Good call....Thanks BB....!I might well do that.....

scallopino - 10-3-2006 at 12:08

Hey Gojira,

The reason i didn't participate in the discussions during your shows was because my pc wouldn't stream! I got up real early to listen and it wouldn't work, and i was really looking forward to it.

But it's just been fixed so is your show still on at the same time?

Pappawas1975 - 10-3-2006 at 17:27

Yes mate, still the same time. I feel kinda bad you having to get up early to listen though! I do appreciate it. This week is a normal show, with lotsa different stuff on it, some youll hate, but you may like others..........Thanks for listening!

Puptent - 10-3-2006 at 19:33

I like the show when I'm able to listen to it, though. Perhaps we should check if we can host a stream somewhere to listen on demand.

Great, i'll be there. Up early. Before the sun and the birds.

They should be archiving the shows soon on the ICR site. We go FM soon also!
Offering Live Assaults in the pipeline too!........AAARRRGGGHHH!!!

BBP - 11-3-2006 at 16:25

Yay! Congrats!

Pappawas1975 - 11-3-2006 at 19:56

We shall see anyway, Im not sure how it would come over in a "live" environment yet. People like to have a running "theme" with their music whilst they drink dont they?...That said, rules are there to be broken..........

Puptent - 11-3-2006 at 20:51

I used to play records in a local youth hangout here, and I mixed up all kinds of stuff all the time. Actually caused some hilarious situations when I played a James Brown record after Slayer's "Angel of death" and managed to piss off a couple of narrowminded metalheads.

Pappawas1975 - 11-3-2006 at 21:08

Yeah, I think thats what its all about. If I did do it, it would be my intention to upset the applecart and throw shit in that people just wouldnt expect or indeed want to hear....!!

Pappawas1975 - 30-3-2006 at 10:31

For those that are into em, and I know some are not, but what the fuck......This weeks show ( April 1st ) is a two hour YES SPECIAL......

Puptent - 30-3-2006 at 16:59

I like Yes (at least their 70s stuff), so I'll listen if I'm at home. :)

aquagoat - 2-4-2006 at 08:01

I listened to most of the show, I'm not a huge YES fan:D (The only album I've ever possessed is 90125, and it was when I was 11), but I think I'll have to reconsider my view on them now.

scallopino - 2-4-2006 at 08:43

Shit. I forgot. And we had daylight savings changeover here in Australia (where the clocks get put backwards an hour), so i had no idea what the time was for a while, and then i had to march in a parade!

Next time for sure.

Pappawas1975 - 2-4-2006 at 11:06

Cool aqua.....Yeah, 90125 isnt the best representation of their music! Although it does have its charm!....Thanks for listening...

DED - 3-4-2006 at 09:40

What is the theme next time?

Pappawas1975 - 3-4-2006 at 15:39

No theme next week, back to the usual variety.....

Pappawas1975 - 18-4-2006 at 09:33

The powers that be have put Offering back an hour, so I now run from 11pm to 1am on saturdays, which does suck. I am going to stick it out until they go FM and see if they totally sell out when they get there....If they do, they end up becoming what they fought against, and Im outta there.....
For now though, onwards and upwards!

BBP - 18-4-2006 at 14:51

That means from 12 to 2 AM for me... Though I suppose Polydigm can get up later now if he wants to have a listen.

Say I listened last week, and had the same problem as with the Miles Davis special: namely the jamming of the media player, causing the computer to 'think' all the time. Is there a solution which does not involve buying a Mac?

DED - 18-4-2006 at 16:40

goto;
windows/programs/real/realplayer
in the player open the link

programs not programma's

That sucks.

Pappawas1975 - 21-4-2006 at 13:23

It does, but their point of view is that most people would not want to listen to what I play during prime time. I can see their point, but....
Im waiting till they go fm, and go from there.....I figure if people know about the show and what I play, Id get a regular audience......I will wait and see.....

BBP - 2-5-2006 at 19:45

Say Goj... You think it would help if we'd all send a mail to them requesting to move your show to its original time? I mean, I fall asleep at 12:30 Dutch time.

I think that would be a great idea, nice one BB. Who knows? It may help, its worth a try at least!!!

Thanks again for your support.

Pappawas1975 - 6-5-2006 at 11:18

I must also take this opportunity to inform / warn you all that tonights shows is a KISS Special. I wouldnt want any of you wandering in uninformed.....!!!

Ok, ok.....thats not one of their greatest moments, I agree! But their earlier stuff kills, and Im afraid I grew up with them, hence I am a card carying member of the Kiss Army! So no more smart ass comments ok?....ha!

I'm just kidding, my first rock album was Creatures of the night, with the Love it loud song (still one of my favourite kiss songs), I've got all their records from Kiss to Asylum, but I've never dared to become a member of the Kiss army though. I'll try to get there on time to listen to the show, hope there'll be Parasite, Going blind and Almost human (my favourite Frehley guitar solo) and the live version of Strutter and God of thunder and...

Pappawas1975 - 6-5-2006 at 20:21

Good to hear aqua! I thought I was just old! Lotsa classic stuff on there, none of the "usual hits", just classic Kiss from all their albums......

Pappawas1975 - 8-5-2006 at 15:11

Will be playing a track from Imaginary Diseases on next weeks show, for those of you that dont yet have it....

BBP - 8-5-2006 at 15:52

Really? I'll be listening!

aquagoat - 8-5-2006 at 18:49

I'll be listening too, even if I plan to buy it anyway.

Pappawas1975 - 8-5-2006 at 19:36

It is a great album...Played it today and realised I hadnt put any on the show....Since the two Zappa specials, Ive kinda shyed away from playing FZ, for fear of overkill amongst the un-initiated listeners!
Havent played anything from Xmasage yet either, so plan on doing that too in the upcoming weeks....

Pappawas1975 - 9-5-2006 at 11:06

Oh, and Offering has joined the current Myspace trend.....
Please visit - OFFERING

DC Boogie! Sounds great! Thanks Goj!

Pappawas1975 - 14-5-2006 at 10:11

I was in two minds what to play cos its all great!....

aquagoat - 30-6-2006 at 14:43

Hey Goj, so what's the situation now with your show ? You stay, you quit ? What's going on ?

Still doing it for now. Im signed till November. Im hoping to carry on into next year, to see if anything changes then. I really should promote the show more, but due to funds, etc, its hard....
Im hoping when they go FM itll boost the shows popularity, cos I know more people would dig it if they knew it was there...
The second Merzbow special is tonight! The third and final Merzpecial will be first Saturday in August.

BBP - 1-7-2006 at 19:04

Cool! I wonder what Merzbow sounds like! Hope I can stay awake 'till twelve (newspapers again).

Approach with due caution BB!!

BBP - 1-7-2006 at 19:24

BBP - 1-7-2006 at 23:18

Nice material!

Where can I buy Merzbow? Apart from Internet?

Thats a tough one. He has done stuff on sooo many labels, some bigger, and some tiny, that its REALLY difficult to get some titles, and Im afraid most stores dont stock much past his "hit" albums. Try specialist, independent places first, but the internet is the ultimate solution really...

Its a nightmare if youre a completist, because you are never going to get all the Merz releases! Hes at about 400 odd albums now, and two have just come out in close succesion of each other!

I kinda pick and choose which Merz albums to go for nowadays, instead of trying to get everything. Of his latest works, the most interesting, to me, is with Jamie Saft - MERZDUB. Merzbow and dub - reggae, you cant go wrong! From what Ive heard sounds great......

On what label is it Goj ? I'm interested.

Pappawas1975 - 12-7-2006 at 18:39

Its on Caminate Records, a US label. They are relatively small, and have no website, apart from a myspace page! ( see what I mean? )
Their previous Merz release, Live Magnetism, was ( sort of ) widely available, especially over here, but it seems MDub is only available through Downtown Music Gallery...at the moment at least!
Now, DTMG are absolutely fantastic, when ordering via tzadik.com, but on DTMGs own sight, their method of credit card payments involves sending an ( encrypted ) e-mail of your CC number, a practice I am not entirely too keen on personally.
Still, if I cant find it elsewhere and / or over here I may as well go and get it there....As I say, ordering through Tzadik through them, they really are second to none.....New York to UK in, on average, a week!!

Pappawas1975 - 12-7-2006 at 18:47

I stand corrected, its actually CaminaNte Recordings, with the N before the "te"....

Go to www.myspace.com/caminanterecordings to hear Merzdub samples!!!

( ps. sorry about not making it an active link, but my PC blew up the other day, and am now using an iMac, and do not know how to work the thing AT ALL, so if anyone else knows, or indeed is using one, please help me!!! )

no problem, thanks for the info. Sorry I can't help with the iMac.

Yeah, sounds pretty good doesnt it? Its definitely among the more interesting recent Merz releases.....I havent heard anything since Senmaida that really pushed the envelope for him, IMO, but that is an ongoing online debate between real Merz freaks, of which I am merely a dabbler.....
Yknow what? His early work ( Age Of 369, Chant, Batztoutai ) rank among his most interesting musics.....

I think I'm gonna buy that too. what about his records on Tzadik ? and the Live at CBGB's 1998 with Alec Empire ?

[Edited on 12-7-2006 by aquabot]

Pappawas1975 - 12-7-2006 at 20:01

I havent heard the Alec Empire cd, so cant comment, but of his Tzadik releases, 1930 is excellent, thoroughly recommended.
Sphere, however, isnt really as good at all. I think this album is Masami Akita treading water. It definitely isnt one of his better records, IMO, that said though, I really should give it another go, as I havent played it for a good while....
Some people hate all his digital albums, saying he stopped producing good music when he bought his laptop to create on ( often referred to by haters as "crap top" ), but I think this is definitely unfair, as IMO he has made some great records in his digital era....( Bariken, Houjoue and Amlux in particualr are top fucking drawer )

Pappawas1975 - 12-7-2006 at 20:09

...and following all this talk about Merzbow, I just gone and ordered Merzdub too......( well, lets face it, I was gonna do it anyway right? )

Pappawas1975 - 13-7-2006 at 10:02

Me too!

BBP - 13-7-2006 at 20:30

Sorry to hear about your PC, Goj... But thanks for your Merzbow help! Went to one very large alternative CD-store today, but didn't find any.

Tip: if you want to make an active link but don't feel like typing the url and /url between [], just type your address, with http:// in front of it, and this forum will make it a link automatically.

Pappawas1975 - 14-7-2006 at 10:17

Thanks for the heads up BB. I am on my fathers PC at the moment, so its easy to use for once! On my Mac, I cant seem to run / install programmes properly either, so I cant get a Flash player or an Anti Virus as yet, which sucks, as it means I cant go to zappa.com on it until I find out where Im going wrong!
Technology eh?

aquagoat - 6-8-2006 at 00:41

I dont have it ( yet! )....From the snippets Ive heard, it does sound pretty good though. I like Elliott Sharp, and the mixture of the two seems to work. Its one of those Merz albums I keep meaning to pick up, but never seem to get round to actually buying it!
Like Ive said before, the Merzbow catalogue is more dangerous than Zappas! At least the Zappa catalogue has one ( or possibly two ) labels, rather than a shitload all situated across the world, and no real end in sight with an average of an album each month....

aquagoat - 6-8-2006 at 13:06

Anyway, some of the music I heard tonight was great.

BBP - 6-8-2006 at 17:32

Damn! Missed it... bloody newspaper round makes me fall asleep at 10 PM...
Sorry Goj, I'll bet it was a great show...
