The infamous "What album did you last buy" thread..

 Pages:  1    3    5  ..  10

Pappawas1975 - 1-7-2006 at 11:41

You couldve had my copy of that BB...I havent heard anything of Dweezils stuff that Ive really liked yet....

Puptent - 1-7-2006 at 13:22

Yeah, I'm still on the fence whether I should get that new Dweezil album or not. I'm not a big shred guitar fan in general...

Pappawas1975 - 1-7-2006 at 15:09

What I heard of Automatic seemed ok, but not enough to make me purchase it. I got Confessions and Shampoo Horn through Music For Nations, when my old band were on the label too. They let us raid their Cd cupboards, so naturally I picked up Dweezil stuff ( and several copies of CPIII, as they didnt have any other FZ titles left after losing the UK distribution rights to Ryko ).....I was totally dissapointed. Shampoo Horn is utterly abysmal.

Puptent - 1-7-2006 at 15:45

I got Shampoo Horn from the local library once, years ago. Suffice to say I never bothered to buy it.

Yep. Thats about the size of it mate.....

BBP - 1-7-2006 at 19:21

Well... I got 4 DZs now, vinyl Havin' A Bad Day, vinyl My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama, for which I had to travel 8 hours in order to get it, Automatic and Confessions.
Bad Day is kinda cute but not very interesting, Guitar is horrible, Automatic is better but has covers from Bizet that simply sound awful. Confessions after hearing it twice I think is funny and has some very nice bits. But musically, well, he's not his dad. His compositions have the tendency to get boring.

aquagoat - 1-7-2006 at 19:28

Confessions are only funny pop songs, that's all, no great artistic pretensions. I don't think we should expect to hear dweezil try to continue his father's work. I wouldn't try if I was in his place.

[Edited on 1-7-2006 by aquabot]

BBP - 1-7-2006 at 19:33

He's done that with ZPZ I think... and pretty well too! Hope to see him doing that again.

aquagoat - 1-7-2006 at 19:35

He "only" played his father's work, did not compose anything like that, and I don't think he should.

BBP - 1-7-2006 at 19:38

Depends on whether or not you approach his soloing as "air sculptures". And I was sceptical about ZPZ myself, but the show sparkled in Amsterdam even without a good frontman.

aquagoat - 1-7-2006 at 19:50

Unfortunately I didn't see the Paris show but a friend of mine told me it was awesome, but I don't think he's got the necessary talent to compose the kind of music his father made, and I think he shouldn't try, cause I don't even see the interest, I think he should do something totally different, find his own way. And once in a while pay a tribute to his dad and spread the Zappa gospel with ZPZ.

Puptent - 1-7-2006 at 20:20

You've got to admire how he pulled off the ZPZ tour thing, it was way better than anyone could have suspected. I wouldn't have paid attention to any new Dweezil Zappa album if it weren't for his great playing on the tour.

Guess time will tell whether his own music is worthwhile. I'm waiting for a couple more reviews of his new solo album before I might buy it.

Like I said, usually these 'guitar hero' albums bore me quickly. Apparently one of his new tracks has him playing Van Halen's "Eruption" backwards. Now, that might be a nice technical exercise, but why bother to release that on on an album?

[Edited on 1-7-2006 by Puptent]

BBP - 1-7-2006 at 23:03

Didn't get Noiture either. But the rest from what I've heard sounds good! If that Inca Roads solo sounds half as good as the one he did in Brussels, it should be great!

Guk... 300+ albums...

Have you considered buying Merzbox with more than 1? I did that once, with my sister. (Now I got RHCP Californication which is now half the price it was then. Eventually my sister didn't like it anymore and said I could have it, mind you at the full price so I had to pay her.) Could work out.

I've just "acquired" this record and I'm really impressed, it's simpler than To megatherion and Pandemonium but it has more impact, in my opinion, perhaps because of the sound that is really good.

It is a good album. Kinda sounds like a "prequel" to Pandemonium in a wierd way.....

Saw them last week in London and they were awesome.
Played mainly older stuff, with only a couple of tracks from Mono.

Got my phone smashed in the pit, but ended up with a better one through the insurance.

Oh wow! Does it have games?
We don't have much positive experience with our insurance companies. Once, my bicycle was stolen out of the shed in the garden, which was unlocked at the time. The insurance wouldn't pay out because the shed wasn't attached to the house.
:pissed:

punknaynowned - 3-9-2006 at 11:52

Insurance is a scam with no kind of governmental oversight, at least here in the states. Here you have to have insurance to do just about anything: drive a car, get sick, sell anything, buy anything, hire people to help you if you've got a business. And then the payouts are skint even if you've paid top $ for years. Everybody in the business is only in it for themselves and their own retirement nest egg and will do whatever it takes to make their quota. Dog eat dog, darwinian escalation to the bottom of the barrel. Yet, the way people treat you if you don't have the correct insurance, even when yer sick is practically criminal. I swear I'm not sure which is worse: legal insurance companies or illegal 'protection' rackets.
oh, woops! last music I bought were the 2 disc versions of bowie's outside and earthling and funkadelic's hardcore jollies and live at the meadowbrook 1971. rounding out the catalogue. yepyepyep.

I think I'm listening to a live performance of pete townshend and roger daltrey in edmonton, alberta.

I definitely heard the overture/underture from tommy live, just now!!!!!
very exciting for me as if it is live an immediate gratification thing of a piece of music I've loved for over twenty years. To a hear new, even, right now, live version, for free, on the net, is fantastic. and then the two of them play a song about having some tea, growing old, just the two of them, 'feeling kinda sad'

Anyone unfamiliar with The Who Live at Leeds should check that out for sure::guitar::drums::singer::guitar2:

they're doing it in conjunction with/for the 24-7 Who internet radio station they've launched. sirius.com, you get a free three-day trial. which means I can listren again on the tenth for them in Vancouver:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Hey punk:

have you ever seen the episode of Family Guy with John Williams in it? You haven't? Ok, i'll tell you about it then...

Brian starts working as a director of porn flicks in LA. He becomes very successful very quickly and gets nominated for the porn film industry awards (the Woodies). One of the awards for the night is for best soundtrack for a film. The first four nominations are all stereotype sleazy smooth restaurant funk-jazz producers sitting in studio who all sound the same, and then there's the last guy: John Williams, who's in a suit with a 120 piece orchestra conducting a complex Star Wars style thing with trumpet fanfares and fast woodwind runs and all! God it's hilarious.

Now it's 5 DZs. GWWYK has, of all, the ugliest front cover (and a back that's worse), impossible sealing, and a disgusting love song with lyrics that would embarrass me if I had written them. On the brighter side, most compositions on it are pretty cool, apart from the first track (that love song. It begins with a high peep that ascends further, like Slow, Deep and Hard from Type-O-Negative). Peaches is nice, though the beginning sounded horrible. And the Inca Roads clipping is a bit cruel. Otherwise it's very enjoyable. DZ has learned not to spend the entire booklet on intensive Thank You messages. Furthermore he's sounding more like daddy, his compositions are definitely interesting. It's possibly his best album yet.

scallopino - 11-10-2006 at 09:56

Well that's good news. What do you think of his guitar playing?

Some more in the classical department:

Codex Faenza: Instrumental Music of the Early XVth Century By Ensemble Unicorn, Naxos label. The title is odd, since all music on it is 14th century. Among others, there's Machaut, Landini and Bologna on it.

Stravinsky: Divertimento; Ravel: Sonata for Violin and Piano; Prokovief: Sonata op 94a, Philips label.

And, my favourite:
Shostakovich: The Nose.
The opera after one of my favourite books. Since it sounds experimental (unlike most of the music Sh. has written), it never got as popular as Lady Macbeth (with the infamous rape scene), so it was rarely recorded. Even in the Shostakovich-year it's difficult to get your hands on The Nose. I found it by coincidence in a second-hand section of a popular music store.

scallopino - 17-11-2006 at 06:09

i saw a documentary the other day about Shosty and Prokofiev and the Stalinist state. Man they had it tough, to say the least.

BBP - 17-11-2006 at 20:58

Yup... Shost was walking on the brink of disaster occasionally whenever he'd composed something the State did not approve of (like Lady Macbeth or his 4th symphony.
The Soviet state was about the only government we know of that would actually censor music. Most censorship in music is limited to changing lyrics, but the Soviets (better put, Stalin) saw threat in tones. Chaikovsky's infamous Ouverture 1812 for instance has been partially recomposed because it contained the hymn of the Czar.

scallopino - 18-11-2006 at 03:43

Yeah. Part of the documentary talked about the music conservatories. Every now and then the "Minister for Music" and the music police would come around and all the students would have to get out their compositions for inspection. The music police would come to everyone with an eraser, pencil and scissors to "fix" their works and get rid of certain intervals and chords.

Pappawas1975 - 18-11-2006 at 12:29

ZAPPA - Trance Fusion ( fucking great album! )
