How's Babylon? Better than Babylon Zoo?

aquagoat - 19-10-2007 at 14:36

Skindred's Babylon album is a very good album, not revolutionary but very good. It's a mix of Raggamuffin and metal with a lil' bit of pop and punk. If you already no the singer's former band: Dub war, Skindred is a better abd tougher version of it. According to a friend who 's a rock journalist, their second album, that will be released on October 29th, is even better than Babylon, so if you want to try it, you'd better buy their second disc: Roots rock riot.

if ou want to listen to a few songs, here are two links:
NOBODY and SET IT OFF I hope you'll like them.

Not bad, not bad... Not too big a fan of that kind of music video though...

Funny thing is those links take me to the French YouTube. :bald:

aquagoat - 23-10-2007 at 14:43

yeah, I didn't pay attention to that, but it's true.

DED - 23-10-2007 at 21:59

Is that only a language shell with all the content or is everything French.

BBP - 24-10-2007 at 18:50

Prolly... but I enjoy reading other languages' computer words. Like the German "speichern".

it used to be here that if you wanted to know the air temperature you would use the telephone and phone up the bank . . .
they had a special number that would give an automated voice that would say the time and the temperature. . .

I stopped one day when I heard myself say out loud
"I'm gonna call up the bank and see what temp it is"

call up?

call up a bank?

and see? no, actually, hear

see the temperature? no, hear what the voice says the indicator shows

really all wrong and yet, that's what we would say.

I'm listening to a marathon zappa set tonight.
I went thru the collection of all the official releases and selected one song from each cd, so lather gets 3 songs, guitar gets 2 etc. beat the boots was not included and I forgot 200 motels. I've never owned a francesco zappa cd so that's not on there and I also threw an ensemble modern version of Night School on there from their greggory peccary release. Got that? The whole thing is over nine and one-half hours long. but all the releases are included except for the exceptions above and I made a conscious effort to choose songs I don't normally seek out or hear very often.
It's been great!!!
np: Rat Tomago, Shiek Yerbouti,

the last album I got was the cd/dvd version of david Bowie's Young Americans: classic. I'm a huge db fan. it's just how it is.

BBP - 3-3-2008 at 15:59

Finally bought a "new" second-hand non-classical album. Kittie - Oracle.

That's an amazing achievement there punk! I'm a recent Bowie fan, since picking up Hunky Dory. The recurring image of Ziggy Stardust put me off for a long time.

punknaynowned - 6-3-2008 at 21:01

yeah, scallop I know what you mean. But it's just a persona, he's had a number of them over the years,
Hunky Dory remains a big favorite, so does Aladdin Sane. Live and Stages are interesting when compared with one another , being 4 years apart chronologically, or less, and rather different music from both, tho even some of the same songs performed.
If you're more interested in the earlier period, around Hunky Dory, try the 3-disc version of Bowie at the Beeb: live recordings for BBC, '67-'73, plus the third disc is a concert for the BBC in 2000 which is cool.
Most of my favorites of his, by now are bootlegs or rarer official releases. I have a couple of cd comps that I put together that I listen to with some frequency :)

scallopino - 7-3-2008 at 11:10

I would say that the song 'Heroes' has one of all time favourite vocal performances. Some other favourites are Prince's "The Beautiful Ones" (must be heard to be believed) and Etta James' "At Last".

punknaynowned - 14-3-2008 at 18:10

The beautiful Ones, what record is that on?

scallopino - 15-3-2008 at 07:30

Purple Rain. It's also worth getting for Darling Nikki, the song that so upset Ms Gore and friends that they started the PMRC.

punknaynowned - 15-3-2008 at 08:58

I remember now scallop, that record was always on when I was a teenager. I'm a long time fan of his just don't expect me to remember all the song titles all the time. and I know very little of his output since 1992 or so.

I recently went mad at Amazon and bought 4 CDs:

1) Out There - Eric Dolphy
2) Out To Lunch - Eric Dolphy

It was about time I got some Eric Dolphy albums. The last track on Out To lunch, Straight Up And Down, is what inspired the Memorial Barbecue I think.

3) 3 Hours Past Midnight - Johnny Guitar Watson

As far as I can make out this is a compilation of his early singles. So, I finally got around to hearing one of FZ's early guitar influences.

4) The Blues And The Abstract Truth - Oliver Nelson

I got this because it had Stolen Moments on it, one of FZ's desert island choices.

punknaynowned - 4-5-2008 at 22:38

I have those two Dolphy records!

and I have a digital copy of Frank's copy of "Three Hours Past Midnight" broadcast over the radio in 1968

I think I have that version of Stolen Moments too, I just can't find it right now! :singer:

What I need to get is The Rites of Spring and that hot lookin Ensemble Modern show with Octandre and all the other zappa stuff that Mr Green Genes put up the other day . . .

Led Zeppelin: III & Physical Graffiti

I've been buying these mainly to have them on CD and they've been going real cheap. Not that I had them on vinyl, I used to, but they got sold a long time ago. I still like most of their stuff.

Roger Waters: Radio KAOS

I only had this on cassette. It's my favourite of his albums.

George Duke: Face The Music

I think I may still have "I Love The Blues She Heard My Cry" on vinyl, but I thought it was about time I got something on CD. Some of it's not bad, but some of it is just a bit too sweet for my taste.

punknaynowned - 18-6-2008 at 03:54

cool polyd!
I used to have those too a long time ago. Still like 'em, I haven't listened to LZ III in . . . it must be 20 years! I only heard Radio KAOS a few times back when it came out. It'd probably be good again, interesting insight perhaps in the situation here in the states. Don't think I've ever heard a whole Duke record all the way thru. Which is surprising as I think he's great on all the z records and there are a number of Dupree's Paradise type improv's I've heard that always knock me out. Just never have pursued it.
I got a bunch of things the other day:
Stan Getz/Charlie Byrd: Jazz Samba
The Replacements first ep on cd STINK "Kids Don't Follow" Plus Seven
The Clash's Sandanista! on a newer remaster
and two from the Bonzo Dog Band: Keynsham and the Doughnut in Granny's Greenhouse:freak:

BBP - 18-6-2008 at 07:10

LZ 3... is that the one I have with the kids on the cover? Not too big a fan of LZ... they bore me too quickly.

I guess Zappa's really made me spoilt! :)

punknaynowned - 18-6-2008 at 19:01

III had a rotating disk with a bunch of individual odd items and images all over a white background, with the letters Led Zeppelin and three puffy roman I's. On the record you turn the dial and different images will appear in the holes cut in the front face of it. . . .

can I hotlink to a page here?
the ones with the kids is Houses of the Holy.
I listened to way too much Led Zep in highschool. They taught me a lot about blues music. "Led Zeppelin, the gateway-drug:lol:

I understand BB after getting into Zappa, Zeppelin can seem almost simple by comparison. But even I know that Zeppelin's greatness lies in the size of it. If you wanted to hear rock-n-roll, they gave an avalanche. For the 'Let the Sunshine In' crowd [], they gave a supernova. If you want a little fire, they gave volcanic eruptions of thunderous power. And so on.
Think BIG, CRUSHING.

Now something like Filthy Habits, Yo Mama or even Torture can have that kind of effect and done like nobody but Zappa. But I like Treacherous Cretins as well as any of Zeppelin's more airy, ethereal things. In The Light on Physical Graffiti is really nice. I just remembered I have much of a 9 cd set of Led Zep outtakes, live things and rehearsals. A big set. So this moment I listen to a 9 minute demo of Jimmy Page on acoustic guitar with Robert singing "That's The Way" from III. It must be outside because you can hear the effect of the wind on the microphone, there's a dog barking. Always liked that song. I listened to this record a lot in my freshman year of college . . .

BBP - 19-6-2008 at 07:00

I think you're right. And it's worse if you get into FZ early, like in high school, right when everybody's getting into music. And instead of having common musical interests with your friends like normal, you see what they listen to as extremely lame and boring in comparison.

BBP - 20-6-2008 at 08:24

I suffered that even before I listened to Zappa, with my Mozart, Beethoven and DAAU.
God thing: DAAU is still around and even stronger, Mozart and Beethoven will always be respected. But where's Peter Andre now? Korn? Limp Bizkit? SpiceGirls? Nothing but nostalgia reunions.

polydigm - 20-6-2008 at 11:18

Whatever contrasts I draw between Zappa's music and the rest, I still find much of Led Zeppelin's music a cut above.

punknaynowned - 20-6-2008 at 13:02

Jimmy Page's production values [for once as far as producers go] did an unparalelled job and made their sound the benchmark for rock in the '70's (and a lot of the '80's too if you think about it). He built that sound from the arrangements to the tape mixes to the eq's and the distortion pedals. On a level with zappa I'd say in defining his own sound. That's why if you introduce it to someone who's never heard it they can react with quite a shock!

I agree. Led Zep was the first band/artist that I really got into. The first album I ever bought was the soundtrack to the Song Remains The Same.

They were really a band of absolute motherfuckers of their instruments. They were all brilliant, and real dynamo performers live (except for John Paul Jones, but he stilled played good). They also had a huge range, from the bone crunching blues based riffs (like Heartbreaker), to real authentic blues, to really beautiful folk music.

A couple of things that turn me off them though are Plant's often orgiastic vocals and the long and totally self-indulgent guitar and drum solos. Actually the drum solos were what I first listened to LZ for because it was straight after I started learning drums.

I remember reading an interview with Jimmy that was done in the mid seventies with a guitar magazine. The interviewer kept asking him what guitars and amps he was using on different songs to get the unique sounds. Almost every single time the reply was: "Just the same amp and the same Les Paul. I just experimented with the mic positions." He really made the most of everything and I think he was like FZ in how meticulous he was in the studio about sound.

aquagoat - 23-6-2008 at 18:17

it's actually a Pin-up went down cd, it has nothing to do with: " nono, nono nono, there's no limits", it's actually a duet by some friends of mine who play a "metal, disco and other things" mix.

about the covers, I must admit I sometimes buy an album because I like the cover a lot, hoping the music will be as good as the picture.

BBP - 23-6-2008 at 20:16

Well I've listened to them both now. First: the Go! Team. The Go Team are nearly the most American sounding British band i've ever heard. Actually, there more of a collective than a band. The music is a mixture of samples from Sonic Youth, old school horn lines and the school yard chants of extremely hip black american youngsters, along with thinly produced and massively compressed drums (similar to the Flaming Lips drum sound), and feel-good melodies sound like 60s movie themes.

Husker Du should be spelt with little double dots on the u's. I don't know what the technical name is. This is (I think) their second or third album and was released in 1985. It is extremely raw and abrasive and fast. But the songs have really wacked structures and excellent melodies. It's the kind of thing where you have no idea what the guy is singing but you sing along anyway. And the guitar playing is something else.

Is it amongst one of these?

Flu, due, June, tune.

No, that's a U with a y-sound before it.
Found an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnzEi8L87NI (with subtitles) When Ronald talks about his childhood soft toy, he says pluche.

He's really funny!

His timing is a bit awkward, but I like his jokes! One of my top faves was when he was going on and on about the time he joined a fitness centre and did all those silly exercises. Like moving on a rowing machine.

"But what if you dream you're on a rowing machine? And then you wake up... and in reality you are a galley slave. And as you're being whipped by the master, you say to your neighbor: "You know I had the weirdest dream... I dreamt I had to pay contribution so I could row...".

Flu and June do not have a y-sound before the u.

BBP - 9-9-2008 at 14:28

True on Flue. June sounds like dune, or dyune. Or tune.

I thought about this and in this case the dy part is the j not the u, so it does qualify. Prune is another one. Prune in June.

polydigm - 9-9-2008 at 23:54

Actually, the more I think about it, the ju in June is not dyu like it is in dune. The ju in June is pronounced like Jew. A lot of people pronounce dune like june because pronouncing dune correctly sounds a bit posh. Dew is another one that a lot of people pronounce like jew because dyew sounds too posh. The j in June should be pronounced like the soft g in edge, there's no y sound involved.

scallopino - 10-9-2008 at 11:50

And it depends what kind of English your talking about. Americans would say Joon for June, doon for dune and doo for dew.

BBP - 10-9-2008 at 16:01

And Joon would be different from June how?

Exactly what I was wondering.

scallopino - 11-9-2008 at 11:19

Well it's spelt une but pronounced oon. 'Une' is ambiguous because dune is spelt like June but pronounced differently in correct British English, but in America all of those are pronounce the same (like oon).

punknaynowned - 11-9-2008 at 16:32

you mean to tell me that all my life I've pronounced 'dune' wrong?
hahahahahahhahahha

Husker Du is an american band. I know that it is 'properly' pronounced 'hoosker doo'.
They put the umlauts on it cause it looked cooler with them there rather than without them.

that is all.
move along now.
nothing to see here.

Oh that's horrible when people do that, just do it because it looks cool... like using Cyrillic symbols. A backward N (pronounced as i, ee), a backward R (pronounced as ya), or a 3 with thingy on the end (z)... So I like to pronounce Korn as Koyan.

(How often do I pronounce Korn? Never, I suppose...)

I thing it describes the music very well since they make a kind of psychedelic doom that's very heavy and very spacey.

I thought it was a genuine Danish (i think) word or phrase that they heard from somewhere. Do you know Bonny (and I know that Danish isn't the same as Dutch...)?

...Kind of an anticlimax, isn't it? Like that song that my sister and I were looking for, turns out to be by a horrible band...
