I was jesting but with a wink to some Zappa lore :)

Quote:

When Frank Zappa was auditioning guitarists, a young, inexperienced Steve Vai rocked up. He could barely muster stubble at this stage, while Zappa was well-established as the moustachioed maestro, making the audition akin to a high school student taking a few conical flasks over to Nikola Tesla’s lair and asking for a job. Nevertheless, Vai had the skills to impress. “He’d play something, and he’d say, ‘Play that’, and I’d play.“ Vai recalled. “Then he says, ‘Now, play it in ⅞’. So I play it in ⅞. He says, ‘Now play it in reggae ⅞”.

This continued for some time, with Vai seemingly passing all the early tests with aplomb. But Zappa wasn’t finished yet. “He said, ‘Okay, add this note’. And it was impossible. It was physically impossible, not just for me but for anybody,“ Vai continued. “I said, ‘I can’t do that,’ and he said, ‘Well, I hear Linda Ronstadt is looking for a guitar player‘”. Crestfallen, the young guitarist began to trudge to the door before a deadpan Zappa revealed he was joking and Vai had secured himself a job.

I hope you enjoy being compared to Steve Vai!

Ah yes Bonny, I remember that now. In my case, I’m auditioning for my own band.

Good answer!

BBP - 12-12-2025 at 20:24

My vacation has started! By tomorrow I'll be at BF's, we booked a stay in an alpaca farm.

polydigm - 12-12-2025 at 22:36

An alpaca farm???

BBP - 13-12-2025 at 12:12

Yes, where we will get our locks (well, my locks anyway) brushed by teenage girls and where we eat healthy alfalfa...

At any rate, I love animals, seals, elephants, cats, tigers, duck, list goes on, so we do occasionally go to the zoo or the petting farm together. This was a fun twist.

polydigm - 13-12-2025 at 23:37

We're coming to Amsterdam tomorrow - we'll be there until Wednesday evening. Meeting up with eldest son and his partner.

polydigm - 16-12-2025 at 09:57

Went to this yesterday in Vincent Hall. The centre piece is an elaborate immersive movie, the first half is about Hieronymus Bosch and the second half about Frida Kahlo. Very cool experience.

BBP - 19-12-2025 at 13:15

Sounds great, did you have a good time in Amsterdam?

I just got back from the stay BF and I were at, which was at Alpaca Farm Ijsseldelta. Last year's seals as neighbours were replaced with the also very cute alpacas. I got to feed one!

We went to visit the pretty Hanseatic League towns of Zwolle, Kampen and Hattum. In Hattum we also visited a museum dedicated to (and as it turns out, designed by) Anton Pieck, one of the best-known and most productive Dutch illustrators, known for his nostalgia style, calendar plates and the work he did for the Efteling.

BBP - 26-12-2025 at 20:43

Back home! It was great staying an extended period with my BF. I now have 2 days to clean my room, then get back to work.

polydigm - 27-12-2025 at 00:35

Pity about the name, but good to get your post in there. Funny story.

BBP - 27-12-2025 at 10:27

The uncut version is funnier and sweeter.

I'd only mentioned in passing to my colleague (who is such a massive Pernell Roberts fan she went to the States on her own to visit some sights), that I was a huge Tim Curry fan. That had been several years ago by the time she made that gift for me. I was travelling abroad to see Dir en Grey at the time. So it was not just the mug, but more that she would remember a small detail.

I think we related the 4 Dogs story here, but...

We don't shy away from second-hand gifts, provided they're spot-on. I am a keen visitor of second-hand shops as you may have gathered. At one temporary shop not far away I saw 2 DVDs of 4 Dogs Playing Poker (4DPP). Unfamiliar with the title, but as Tim Curry was on the cover I very quickly took one of them - and the girl next to me warned me that it was a really bad film. I thank her for the warning but buy it anyway. If you already muscled your way through Annie and 2 Barbie movies for Tim you may as well.

Back home I put it on that evening and found myself talking through Tim while I was complaining to my father how bad it was, less than 10 minutes in. I lasted until Tim's character died, then the poor unrealistic plot, hollow characters and the foul mouth dialogue made me turn it off.

Fast forward to St Nicholas two weeks later - Dad had been to the same store and bought the other copy, hoping I would be over the moon with that gift. He was mildly crushed, but when I reminded him that was the film I complained to him about, he remembered. We gave the copy away to my sister who has no doubt rehomed it since.

Four months later, for my birthday, I was surprised to find he had gotten me 4DPP again! And was disappointed that I was not over the moon with it at all.

After reminding him of the earlier episode we regifted it to someone we don't like (and who we haven't seen since, so I guess mission accomplished) and I resorted to cruel and unusual punishment to make him remember not to buy that piece of crap - I made him watch it.

He liked it.

:swear:

In the end I did watch the film to the end, as there was some TC I had missed - but gow it was awful, every last second of it.

It's been snowing so much Schiphol cancels hundreds of flights per day. Not the best time to be running this kind of service.

BBP - 8-1-2026 at 20:20

Merci!

So far the emergency phone shifts have been manageable, we'll see how it goes in the next few days. It's been snowing a lot, today it melted a bit, Friday there'll be a lot of snow in the north where BF lives but away from most airports. The weekend will be very, very cold.

It's like watching a stampede coming right at you from some distance.

Plook - 13-1-2026 at 22:57

Handed in the AIVD puzzle, so I got my life back. :) BF was a total sweetheart indulging me in writing complex software that could crack the infinite Enigma machine they had made for it.

Emergency phone wasn't as bad as expected.

Sooo I guess now it's back to normal...

You have my vote, I don't know what you all are seeing but his popularity is so low the republicans are going to take a beating in November unless he try's to suspend the elections or some similar autocratic bullshit...it could get bad if he goes that route but he is already talking about suspending elections or martial law that is why he is trying to create a false narrative of unrest in the streets I am fearful this ICE thing is just a staging for that strategy.

Eddie RUKidding - 16-1-2026 at 00:19

Hopefully the Republicans themselves will impeach him before then, war with NATO could be interesting.........

Eddie RUKidding - 3-2-2026 at 22:20

Well done Plook- hopefully free and fair voting will still be allowed in the US, after Dumps latest moves.................

BBP - 4-2-2026 at 21:04

I hope that too. I never ever thought I could be concerned about whether or not I'd be allowed on the streets of the US with my standing - but I may be going to the States later this year, and as Carnaval season approaches my costume of the Statue of Freedom is nearing completion. I had the idea two years ago, when I had a bad place for the parade and held my hand high whilst making photos just so I wouldn't be looking at necks all the time. Might as well incorporate that into a costume.

'Course with my posture I mock everything I try to look like. And as a symbol of the USA may not fall in favour with certain growds I was contemplating coming as a "greey" Statue charging exorbitant amounts for post cards and photo ops. Or I could say I seek asylum. Whatever.

I'll also be attending carnaval in Oeteldonk ('s-Hertogenbosch) which has a very lively and unique carnaval tradition. Basically instead of costumes, you wear a keel or a black coat, adorned with patches in red/yellow/white, with red/yellow/white accessories and lots of frogs. I don'have a Carnaval coat yet, so now I'm panic sewing.

BBP - 10-2-2026 at 17:32

I'm done with the panic sewing and only pricked myself about twelve times or so. And I can still type. :D

Last day, I should be draping green fleece blankets over me to see if I can get a statue of freedom-ish look out of myself. Weather forecast says I'll be freezing my butt off on Saturday.

Plook - 10-2-2026 at 22:18

Bonny you need a thimble...💡

Eddie RUKidding - 10-2-2026 at 22:20

and a blanket

BBP - 11-2-2026 at 20:06

I have a few thimbles, but alas the good Lord gave me a body that's not feminine in some proportions, for instance I have oversized hands and feet to the extent I don't fit in women's shoes or gloves. By extent thimbles are too tiny for me. They should fit around the middle finger of your dominant hand (you use it to push the needle through the fabric) but they just don't fit.

For Saturday I have 2 blankets that I'll use as drapes over my green dress. Below that lots of thermoweave.

BBP - 16-2-2026 at 22:11

Today's Rose Monday, the Monday of the carnaval season.

Oeteldonk (the Carnaval name of 's-Hertogenbosch, where I work) has a very lively Carnaval tradition, with its own outfits, parades, music et al. If you want to celebrate carnaval there you're not let into any cafe unless you're dressed in Oeteldonk style - typically a blue or black blazer or farmer's shirt, decorated with patches that refer to Oeteldonk, frogs and the love for the celebration and its music, culture and beer, combined with accessories in red-white-yellow.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFYQpCl4pmc&t=30s Some atmosphere impressions of the bits. https://www.oeteldonkje.nl/ if you're inspired and want to come to the party next year, get your kit here.

Usually I go to Eindhoven or nearby Geldrop (Lampegat and Lappegat respectively) to celebrate carnaval, where costume is normal, and I had made a Statue of Freedom costume this year to flaunt.

But as my colleagues last year had such a great time at the company's carnaval café outing, I decided to make a, Oeteldonk carnaval coat. This involved hand sewing 22 emblem patches onto a perfectly fine black blazer and set me back a bundle as well. (the patches, not the blazer). Panic sewing, but it got done.

Unfortunately, Carnaval is celebrated so majorly among my colleagues that they had given too many people a vacation in this period. Whoops. This meant there was nobody on Carnaval Sunday to work for the Special Care department - my department, so when they asked I decided to help out - and ended up having to help complaints on site. Which is highly stressful and not my area of expertise, I had to be trained to do it even for this one day, which I'd rather spend watching a parade.

So, agenda jam packed. Friday was my day off but the company Carnaval, Saturday day off to be Statue of Freedom at the Lampegat parade, Sunday work on clients with complaints in resort, work from Monday through Thursday, then off to visit BF again and look after his nieces' bunnies.

At the company carnaval I met numerous colleagues in their Carnaval coats, who had the day off and had shown up especially for the company drink. But while the year before the boss had rented the nearby café for snacks and consumptions, this year the company was split in two - and Customer Care basically got a bit of beer or wine and one whole bitterbal.

All us partygoers in our coats were a bit desillusioned at this - as a non-drinker i basically panic sewed a carnaval coat and showed up on my day off for one bitterbal (I love them, don't get me wrong, but it's literally 2 bites and then it's gone), so we hit the town, the seven of us. After arriving at the first stop - a streed with several cafés (where we had lunch, Poly) and it was so insanely busy it took twenty minutes to reach the end of the short street. We paused to get a few pitchers of beer and I decided to head home - which is a tale and a half with so many people.

Came home, exhausted, was so tired I went to bed at 9PM. No alcohol, just that bitterbal.

Was so tired the day after that I gave Lampegat a miss and tried to rest a bit for Sunday. That's one powerful bitterbal!

I told DED about the disappointing one sole bitterbal. He now keeps singing "Bonny has only got one ball..." I'd better get a whole box of them for my birthday.

BBP - 18-2-2026 at 21:16

Woke up at 3AM feeling sick (hoping it doen't grow worse from there because I really want to visit BF this weekend) , was contacted by my mother and had a bird poop on my coat. Not the best day in all, even if they say bird poop is lucky.

BBP - 22-2-2026 at 20:36

Back from BF's so the flu didn't set in, yay! We had a great time, went to the pancake restaurant and played a board game called Cities. The copy had a misprint causing it to miss half the manual so we spent some time searching online for it.

On the way I got a copy of Virgin Suicides at the little book stall in Utrecht where you can leave the books you read and pick up new ones. Finished it before I got home.

BBP - 8-3-2026 at 10:37

Had 15 calls of which 14 were related to the situation in the Middle East - people who were stranded halfway during their repatriation, one who still was in Dubai and didn't think the situation was that bad (I'm happy that's your experience ma'am, the clients I spoke who were at the airport during the drone attack would disagree) and people stranded in Thailand and Zanzibar who had a stop in Dubai.

4:30 AM, client who is stranded in Thailand says: "My flight in 2 days via Dubai is cancelled, but there's another one tomorrow going to Dubai, can I take that one?" Sigh.

Plook - 9-3-2026 at 17:10

I'm flying to LA tomorrow for a funeral the 2nd to last neighborhood mom passed away she was 92 lived in her house 70 years she died one day after my moms day 7 years later, my mom was 85 years old and had been in her house 63 years.

Jeanette was a homemaker but much more she raised 4 kids (her son Jim was one of my good surf & skateboard buddies in the early days).

Their house had a basketball hoop on the garage and the designated spot for endless basketball matches, they had so many broken windows they put bars over them way before they were used to hinder break-ins.

She was more than a mom she was an excellent artist that worked in pastels for many years producing top quality works she had an affinity for doing portraits of Native Americans Indians.

It is a quick turn around flyout tomorrow at 6am get a car drive to Norwalk for the funeral, La Mirada for the graveside service, and then Fullerton for the reception then back to LAX to my room and fly home Wednesday morning at 7am.

It's a tour de force of So Cal driving, woo hoo, but I get to see old neighborhood friends and my good friends Robert & Glory live right by the cemetery so I plan on dropping by to say hello, fun fact my first wife Terri matched made them in the 80's still married and have two wonderful daughters that are great athletes that both went to college on scholarships.

Maybe I can call Bonny if I get stuck in an airport...

BBP - 18-4-2026 at 17:50

Soooo, what were you up to last month?

I had a wild rollercoaster of a month when on March 16th I was informed my contract was not to be extended with the online travel agency I handle complaints for. I was very upset about it - having the Goose down added insult to injury - so the last month was basically panic job application. In total I had 15 job interviews in less than 4 weeks!

Inbetweein it was also Easter, and my birthday on April 4th. I had long planned to visit my boyfriend and do something like stay at a hotel (as it also marks our 10th anniversary together, love ya babe), but the decision threw a spanner in the works and we decided to just have a simple visit instead.

Still, BF was intent to spoil me rotten - the weekend after I was told about my job, I visited him and he took me on an early birthday boating outing to a seal release (official footage here) on International Seal Day, 22 March. It was international indeed - on the boat there were people from China, Japan, Russia, Ireland, Germany, Belgium, Spain, South Africa - and the woman next to me came from Eindhoven as well. :D

For the Easter weekend I went to BF again - and he took me to a place I had been wanting to visit ever since I first heard of it,: the planetarium of Franeker, the world's oldest working orrery. Documentary is attached (you can set subtitles to English in the settings).https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0GAcKgOYLY

We also went to the Lego museum in nearby Grootegast, and the WW2 museum right next to it, an inspiring combination, joined together by a 50s diner. The lego museum had a display on Fabuland, the lego I grew up with along with Duplo. I don't think there are better toys imaginable than simple blocks.

Dad's birthday was spent by him being very grumpy over fixing the Goose - it had been more than a month, he contacted my boyfriend who then fixed it in 15 minutes.

I'm keeping him!

Luckily I found a new job, next month I will be working for the Dutch municipality.

polydigm - 18-4-2026 at 22:24

Good to see the Goose back online.

I performed live twice in March.

I joined a band called London Zappa Collective in November last year, playing alto sax. The first time I performed with them was Dec 7 last year and on that occasion I also got to do a solo set as Turbulator. We played again on March 14 opening for a seventies rock covers band called MindfooD [sic]. The band is a bit amateurish but now that I'm getting my live chops together I'm hoping to have some influence on upping the ante. I've added in the bari sax as well and the next time we play will be in June and I'll be able to do another Turbulator solo set.

On March 21 I performed solo as Turbulator at Festival Moo-ah! 2026. A very good experience with lots of positive feedback from audience and other musicians. If you haven't heard of it, Festival Moo-ah! is the UK's only Zappa festival and has been revived this year from a long hiatus after being wiped out by Covid.

I've put three live tracks from my Mooah performance on my Youtube Channel.

I hope everyone's well.

Eddie RUKidding - 19-4-2026 at 01:30

Good to see if back- much the same here still posting and making musick ;)

BBP - 20-4-2026 at 17:24

Anyway here's the pics of my birthday outing to Franeker:

Where? What? Well, it's a quaint old town that's pretty, but what makes it special over all the other quaint old towns we have here, is it has the world's oldest still-working orrery - that is Unesco world heritage. It's called the Royal Eise Eisinga Planetarium and is a pretty amazing visit.

To harbour the many visitors, the planetary has now gobbled up the 2 buildings beside it to teach about the galaxy and to display beautiful old telescopes and such.

View of Franeker, with town hall

The museum (Planetarium with black sign, and the two buildings to the left of it. The centre building has a pretty jugendstil restaurant.)

The beautiful former town hall of Franeker

The museum shows many old astronomical instruments and clocks. I tried to translate some of it but couldn't figure it out.

A beautiful antique astrolabe, a device to measure how high the stars are and thus position yourself;

Here it i, or the main part of it! In 1776 Eise Eisinga started to build the orrery, which took him 7 years to complete. On the side, as he also ran a successful wool business (he was well-love for his woad blue dyes) and held numerous prominent positions. The orrery is in the main room, the living room where you would receive visitors - but also dining room, kitchen, and bedroom. (and this clock ticks believe you me.

Eise bought the clock with a regular 25cm pendulum (which moves back and forth once per second) but he found that he would have to gut a hole in the ceiling of his already tiny alcove, so he shortened it so it goes back and forth 80 times per minute and adjusted the gears.

All the gears were hand made, mostly from oak wheels with every single one of the iron nails hammered in separately at the correct distance. For Venus and Earth, where there is a lot to do in the centre (and there is a little moon circling Earth as well) the gears are metal with the teeth filed out.

Eise did have help from his father and brother for the hammering and the painting, but he largely made it on his own and did the brain work for all the on his own.

The orrery is to scale, the size of the planets and distance between them are to scale. Uranus was discovered in 1781, the year Eise finished the orrery - had it been discovered earlier, the planetarium would have to double in size or only use half the scale (which would get very crowded in the centre).

To install it, Eise had to make a deepened ceiling - about 40 cm deep I estimate - where he somehow had to manoeuver these huge hoops. He also regularly maintained it and left detailed instructions for his sons on how to take care of the orrery. These are used to this day.

Here are: a sign that says "remember that God is everywhere", on the right the largest gear is the day indicator (goes round once per year), Saturn (goes round once every 20 -odd years or so) and Jupiter (goes round once every nearly 12 years)

With this time indicating - you'll hear it ticking, believe you me, but you don't see it moving at all. Just come back later and compare photos.

There! I was there on my birthday, April 4th!

In the beautiful salon, there is a treasury of orreries and assorted instruments, like this gorgeous tellurium. It sadly didn't appear to be running but it displays the positions of sun and moon, moon phase and such. The dominical letter (D) is correct for 2026 though.

Eddie RUKidding - 20-4-2026 at 23:18

very nice Bonny

Plook - 21-4-2026 at 17:06

Well done Bonny on getting the site back up and what awesome pictures from your trip, happy birthday!

I am still plugging along trying to stay healthy working out 3 days a week, riding bike 3 days a week and golfing 3 days a week as weather permits.

I went to a No Kings protest a couple of weeks ago we had a really good turn-out for this small town.

My oldest daughter visited last week from Rohde Island with her family which was nice, her oldest daughter is 10 years old and already 5'3" almost as tall as her mom the dad is 6'5" so there is some height on his side of the family.

Kathy retires next week so we will be entering a new phase of life that I am looking forward too.

No golf today it is raining here, we head out on vacation to the Central Coast in 3 weeks.

I have to see my new ophthalmologist tomorrow I have been having sever eyesight issues in my right eye so we will see what they say for what is up there.

Good to be back with you all...😀

BBP - 21-4-2026 at 20:09

Hi Plook! Lovely to hear from you again!

Sorry to hear about your eye, I hope it'll get well soon!

BBP - 27-4-2026 at 13:46

There are still some issues with the site, these involve quotation marks. Once a post has a certain quotation mark or apostrophe mark, the post is shown as empty. (For example my thread about Wuthering Heights in the book zone appears empty). BF and I intend to work on that during our holiday week.

Today is the Dutch national celebration the King's birthday. I don't care about the royal family so to me it's just a day off. Tomorrow will be my last working day as a travel agent.

Plook - 27-4-2026 at 15:41

Bonny what are you doing after you leave the Travel Agent position?

BBP - 27-4-2026 at 21:16

I'm going to work for the municipality - client contact, so initially back to the phones and later e-mail and if I'm advanced enough at the desk. It means I'll be leaving tourism. Hopefully the municipality is more stable - less impromptu extra work if the Orange One decides to start another war.

Instead of panic sewing I did some panic crocheting to give to dear colleagues. I'd found a mini teddy bear pattern and managed to whip up 9 teddies in just a few days.

Eddie RUKidding - 28-4-2026 at 04:30

Well done on job hunting

Plook - 28-4-2026 at 20:51

Awesome Bonny I wish you the best but knowing you I am sure you will do just fine there.

Teddies were well-loved. I could make a business out of them :D except it takes about half an hour to crochet and then three hours to put the little bits together.

I have a question for the native English speakers here: in Dutch we have tons of folk birthday songs: Lang zal ze leven, Er is er een jarig, Zij leve hoog, 2 violen en een trommel en een fluit and I can name quite a few more. But whenever people have a birthday in an English show, I hear Happy Birthday. Whenever there's a French or German song, it's their version of Happy Birthday (Joyeux Anniversaire / Zum Geburtstag Viel Glück).

Are there any other folk birthday songs than Happy Birthday? What did people sing on birthdays before that song was patented?

Plook - 29-4-2026 at 15:27

It has always been Happy birthday here since I was a kid, here is what I found:

Before "Happy Birthday to You" was popularized in the early 20th century (originating from "Good Morning to All" in 1893), people didn't have a single standard song. Instead, they commonly sang "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow". Others would simply offer toasts, shout congratulations, or sing celebratory songs that varied by region and culture.

• "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow": This song was, and still is, a popular celebratory song that was used for birthdays as well as other occasions.

• "Good Morning to All": The melody for "Happy Birthday" was originally composed by sisters Mildred and Patty Hill in 1893, and was used in schools with the lyrics: "Good morning to you, / Good morning to you, / Good morning, dear children, / Good morning to all".

• Other Celebration Customs: Before birthday parties became widely common in the late 19th century, celebrations focused more on the cake and well-wishes rather than a specific, standardized song, according to a 2010 paper by Robert Brauneis.

The "Happy Birthday to You" lyrics were combined with the 1893 tune and appeared in print around 1912.

Thanks Plook! It's almost comical that we have so many birthday songs, I wonder if they originate from the 1800s reeducation.

I had to go on an emergency trip to the dentist - last week my molar started to hurt badly and as a lump had developed, I feared that there would be an infection of some kind and that I would have to have it pulled. Not something I would want so shortly before my vacation (postponed to tomorrow).

I was so scared and basically had gulped ibuprofen, but the dentist found no root infection, just a bit of parodontitis. She cleaned my molar and sent me off with recommendations for interdental brushes.

Just saying hello. Really busy as usual. I hope everyone’s well. Plook, I hope your eye problem gets sorted - I’ve got some eye problems of my own.

Bonny, good luck with the new job. I had an infected top left number 7 a week ago. Antibiotics have settled it down and I’m on a waiting list to have it out.

BBP - 3-5-2026 at 10:46

Bf and I are hard at work restoring the forum. There are 3 issues - missing smileys, one issue converting special symbols translating to different ones (like Poly's apostrophe not shoeing up properly). Lastly and leastly some posts show as empty. These are caused by a discrepancy in language set. The symbol conversion issue started after a server issue on Godaddy's side.

It's very interesting and I am learning a lot about SQL.

Plook - 6-5-2026 at 16:18

Bonny I also notice when I go to a "Subject" and click in it takes me to page 1 were it used to take me to the most current page, just letting you know it really isn't a big deal.

We appreciate you doing the work to get things back up and running, I am glade you are finding it a labor of love that always makes the task more enjoyable.

BBP - 8-5-2026 at 19:21

With Hanta vrus showing up, I'm glad I left tourism.

First work week has been three days long, today I began on the phone for the first time. The work is a bit much, but it's also fun, the atmosphere in the office is great, we have a nice view and I have great working conditions. I'm making my former colleagues jealous with being free on Ascension and te day after - at the travel agency they decided this year it's not a day off anymore. Kicking back and chilling!

BBP - 10-5-2026 at 17:20

Yesterday there was a performance by Gruppo Sportivo, therir 50th anniversary tour (also their final tour). It was a hassle getting DED there (and back!), but he was very happy we went and I enjoyed myself. With such an old band it's a surprise that their keyboard player is a 14-year-old, but Len de Quant is pretty exceptional as a keyboard player. Remember that name, people!

Happy mothers day everybody

polydigm - 10-5-2026 at 22:21

We have Mother's Day three weeks before Easter in the UK. (It is the second Sunday in May in Australia.)

BBP - 12-5-2026 at 19:31

Same here.

I have a 2 day work week this week, need to be careful not to get too used to it now I have a 36-hour work week. But it bafles me that I leave home later, come home one hour earlier (at least) and have half an hour of extra break time per work day.

Does this new web site setup mean that certain functions that weren't working before will now work? Like setting time zones and profile pictures etc?

Plook - 13-5-2026 at 04:15

Kat and I are off to the Central Coast in the morning, it appears the weather will be very good, can't wait to breath in some beach air

BBP - 13-5-2026 at 18:30

Poly: We're still tinkering around with what does and does not work. We'll need to upgrade to one version higher than this one but for now she is working. We're also working hard with future proofing. Our prime focus was recovering the missing posts, now that that's fixed, we're going to work on the broken language conversion. This because we want to make sure all apostrophes are called &apos instead of anything else, so that with the next upgrade we won't risk losing content there.

I'll look into the working of the icons and the working of the time zones, but it's not on the priority list.

Plook: sounds good! Can you bring us some sun here? We need it!

BBP - 14-5-2026 at 10:21

Good news Poly! The time zones are working in this update! Just try it!

We made it to the coast the weather while cooler is beautiful here, the drive wasn't bad at all we suspect because gas prices are so high people are avoiding driving I haven't seen traffic that lite in 10 or 15 years.

We had a seagull waiting for us on the balcony reminding us of Kevin the seagull the visited us every day last year.

When we walked in and saw him I said "What the heck!" but alas it was a different bird.

We got coffee this morning and headed to the beach to watch the surf which was good with overhead drops, I really miss surfing.

The otters in the bay were extraordinarily close to shore and extremely cute frolicking and grooming themselves, several had pups I believe Bonny would be hooked and spend hours there.

Today we will do our regular trip to Hearst Castle and tomorrow is golf day.

I will check in later...

Eddie RUKidding - 15-5-2026 at 01:13

Good one Plook.

Your gas is almost as exy as ours ;)

maybe its Jonathon Livingston Seagull.............

Plook - 16-5-2026 at 05:45

We are sure it is Kevin from last year he comes for snacks when we get to the room each time and he is nesting in the same part of the roof on the building across the street as last year we are blown away!

polydigm - 16-5-2026 at 11:35

Hey Plook, hope you’re well. Have you ordered the latest Zappa release?

Plook - 17-5-2026 at 02:25

Hey Poly how ya doin, we are enjoy a holiday at the beach...I have not purchased it but I watched a short clip of Joe Travis explaining what it was and when and how it came to be, seems very interesting...Have you listened to it, if so what is your take on it?

BBP - 19-5-2026 at 21:47

New job has generally been much less hectic and stressful than the old travel agency work was (although much less hilarity with people complaining about the size of the television or the absence of caramel latte). Generally I speak to people who are on benefits or who work in healthcare - I speak to several homeless people per day, for instance. Today was rough when I spoke to a man twice who threatened to kill himself. We made an agression report and we got a cool down talk, then were allowed to take a break - glad to know that here they take care of their staff.

Of course the chain came off my bicycle when I went home, and had to walk for half an hour.. in the rain...

polydigm - 21-5-2026 at 23:47

Hey Plook, I haven’t had a chance to listen to it properly yet, but from what I have heard, the sound quality is remarkable for when it’s from. I was mainly asking because you’re in the US to find out where the US ones are currently being made.

Plook - 22-5-2026 at 00:46

Poly - I will see what I can find out...

Plook - 22-5-2026 at 17:35

Poly her is what I found

Frank Zappa’s Cheaper Than Cheep was released by Zappa Records and distributed by Universal Music Enterprises (UMe). The vinyl was manufactured by Optimal Media GmbH in Germany, and the physical set (CD/Blu-Ray) was glass mastered and pressed by Conectiv in Guadalajara, Mexico.

• The audiovisual set is a restored 1974 rehearsal recording. Here is a quick breakdown of its distribution and retail availability:

• Retail Distribution: The Super Deluxe Box Set, Vinyl, and CD + Blu-Ray editions are distributed globally through physical record shops and online retailers.

• Online Exclusives: Select variants, such as picture disc vinyl and exclusive merchandise bundles, are sold directly through the Official Zappa Store and the uDiscoverMusic Store.

• Streaming: The audio soundtrack is distributed on digital streaming services such as Spotify and YouTube Music.

The pricing I am seeing is:

• 2CD + Blu-Ray: $45 to $503

• LP Vinyl: $75 to $80

• Super Deluxe Box Set: $180

Hope this is what you were looking for.

Back from the BF, looking after the inlaws' cat. He's resorted to giving "warning bites" very easily - got bitten twice in like three days' time.

BBP - 28-5-2026 at 17:20

Ater 2 years I managed to clean up after the renovation so BF can stay with me. Hurray!

BBP - 31-5-2026 at 10:31

BF came and went, now up to do the housework and yard. Weather had been hothothot out here, 30+ which is insane for end of May, I'm worried about what this is going to mean for the summer in terms of droughts.

BBP - 1-6-2026 at 20:18

I bluntly refuse to believe that 13 is an unlucky number.

Today I brought my 13th box of surplus items to the thrift shop, in the ongoing cleaning of my room. The one that is at 7km away, which is a good intensity bicycle ride - especially as it's very warm, humid and involved carrying a box.

I was about 800m from my destination when my chain fell off the sprockets. Fixing it is manageable, but messy, and so I decided to walk the remaining distance and fix the chain after the shopping.

Handed in the stuff and went in. I came early as Monday tends to be the day for some traders to come in and snip up all the decent items, but alas there were no interesting DVDs or CDs that warranted the early arrival. There was a large number of crochet and knit books - I took about ten of them to look at them closely, and decided to buy a can of Coke Zero.
Couldn't get the machine to work initially - one of the employees came to my help but I had just succeeded in getting the can.

And then I opened it and was greeted by a coke fountain.
:(

The employee had gone, so I went to get him and asked him to get a towel or something. Took him ten minutes. Wiped the floor and table, can and myself. Luckily there were no stains on either me or the books.

Sat down, went to examine my prospective purchases, when I was brutally reminded that the first monday in June is when our alarm sirens and NL Alert system are tested - proceeding in deafening noise as the sirens are located on the roof of the shed where the thrift store is.

Browsed through the books and found a few interesting ones - btut at such bizarrely high prices you'd think they were new, rather than thrifted. Up to 13 euros for a used thin book with knitting patterns they got for free - like how? How do you ecpect to run a thrift shop that way?

With some dismay I left all the books at the shop and went home.

After fixing the chain, of course. After putting it back on the gears, I spin the wheel to rub my hand against it to clean it off - and the chain comes off again.
I put it back on - spin the wheel - chain comes off again.
I noticed how loose the chain was, even after putting it on - something that would need repair. I put it on again and decide to go back without washing my hands.

500m away from the shop I make a turn for a nearby and nearly defunct shopping precinct, where I go to the pharmacy to get some things to clean my hands, and visit the supermarket to get some food and drink. I also have an ice cream.

As I cycle home, with a carton of milk that needs to stay cool while the weather outside is most definitely not - the chain drops off again. I stop to repair it - only to find that the chain has now broken. Nothing I can do to fix that, but for a long walk to the nearest bicycle repair man. But the one in the shopping precinct is closed on Mondays.

On the long way home I turn into a road about 2/3rds of the way to look for a bicycle repair shop that is there. After looking for about 15 minutes I ask a nearby person delivering papers door-to-door - he informs me that that shop has closed and the closest one is too far away for me on foot .

I walk back past another repair shop that also appeared to be defunct.

I go home, decidedly close to losing my sense of humour. After a rest I walked it to the only repairman I could find in walking distance - shady but as long as he does the job. Here's hoping it's fixed by tomorrow.

Of the three of us who started off at the municipality on May 6th, one bit the dust as she didn't pick it up quickly enough. Was a bit of a downer.
