Heeey, do you have Hancock's Back to the Beach soundtrack, with Dweezil and Terry Bozzio? The track Wipe Out on that was nominated for a Grammy. And lost. To FZ.

aquagoat - 28-9-2014 at 19:04

no, I didn't know that track.

Wildbirds & peacedrums: Rhythm.

Pater Moeskroen - Heimwee. A bit of a gamble since I didn't like that other album I bought of them, but it has Vannacht which I did like.

I have something against their lyrics.

I have something against flute, haaaaaaaaaaa, too much flute in there.:D

BBP - 4-4-2015 at 11:28

Haha! Their flautist is a cutie though.
Woodwinds like the flutes (whistles, tin whistle, piccolo, ocarina and anything else you blow into directly), because of their nature, tend to be rather agressive and forward. Compare them: in an orchestra there are 24 violins and two to four flutes.
Now, when you teach a kid to play music, you tend to push a recorder in their hands. Why no zither? Or anything else that's soft in nature?

Do you like panflutes?

aquagoat - 4-4-2015 at 12:20

Panflute is ok, but actually it's more the "flute in a celtic/folk context" that gets on my nerves, I have no problem when Napoleon Murphy plays the flute with Zappa, for example.

BBP - 22-4-2015 at 16:15

I thought I'd just bought Max Bruch's 1st violin concerto by Joshua Bell, but it turns out there's a Wibi Soerjadi CD in the box. :(

9 cds, that a lot of music to listen to, I' ve got a few box sets like that, Stravinsky, Bartok, Ravel, Pierre Henry, etc... it's cool to be able to hear the evolution of their music as you listen to lots of their works one after the other.

BBP - 2-5-2015 at 13:45

Chopin wasn't given much time to develop, sadly - he died in his 30s of TBC. There are three early waltzes on it that weren't on another Chopin waltz collection I have; one of these is in A-minor and rather old-fashioned and easy, and the other has such an unusual chord in it that I did some internet research to see if it was a misprint in the sheet music. (it wasn't, it puts a D, A flat, A and B flat opposite each other)
This is the easy one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aspcdJ8Nz0c
The one with the freaky chord:

punknaynowned - 21-6-2015 at 21:57

Found a bunch of rolling stones on youtube that has appeared along with that group's fifty year recollection...

I put it in on and the links go on for hours of so many things, rare versions, recording outtakes, live, etc :bouncy:
It's so great to get all these other one-offs -- of other people's lives even, that I never heard on record before, but
make me recall my past when I listened to the same band on the official records, in my own settings.

If that makes sense.

polydigm - 5-2-2016 at 23:49

I haven't been into collecting music for some time now as any spare time I get I spend on my own music, but I still get the urge to hear something I haven't heard before and over the last year or so I've bought several Eric Dolphy albums and a couple of Duke Ellington albums. I've been listening to all of these when we have family get togethers and they're all worth having. I've really liked Billy Cobham's Spectrum forever so I've also bought a couple more of his albums with mixed results. I've never had any of John McLaughlin's albums from before he started Mahavishnu Orchestra. They're mostly at least interesting but some of the guitar is sketchy and doesn't have the clarity he'd developed by the time Mahavishnu Orchestra cam along. John McLaughlin was with Tony Williams for a while and I just got the latter's Turn It Over album and the singing on it is terrible and pretty much ruins what is otherwise interesting music.

BBP - 8-2-2016 at 15:52

Technically I didn't buy it, since I got it for free:

In Cryptic Form - Hunger For Balance.
I occasionally find piles of the same album at the second hand shop for next to nothing, which means they're from a local band and somebody's getting rid of stock. This is something black metal-ish from Bergeijk. Can't say I'm appreciating it so far, but I'm only on the first song.

Luckily, Dance Me This also came in!

King Crimson Trip? Sounds like a great christmas to me!

I've got TOAPP and COTCK.

polydigm - 2-12-2017 at 02:23

I have all the King Crimson Albums from a previous remastered series. I've been a fan since my late teens.

aquagoat - 2-12-2017 at 07:56

Yes, I've got most of them on cd already, but I've wanted to buy them with the new mix by Steven Wilson, for a long while. Some of these records are really outstanding. Yes, great christmas present, I think.

Bonny, you should get Starless and Bible Black, Red, Larks tongue in Aspic and Discipline, imo.

The first three are my favourite pre Belew albums as well. Discipline is a good Belew era album, but Power To Believe is a monster.

BBP - 4-12-2017 at 12:37

I hope you realize I haven't been able to buy new albums for quite a while...

aquagoat - 4-12-2017 at 20:27

Hee, no, I didn't realize that, sorry. :shy: Bonny, I'd be really glad to send you Starless, Red and Thrak. Actually, this is what I'm gonna do as soon as I've received the new versions. :D

I really like Power to Believe, I'm impatiently waithing for its 40th anniversary release. I like In the Court and In the Wake, but my favourites are definitely Lakrs Tongues, Starless and Red. I like the Belew era stuff too, but the production sounds so dated and thin in comparison to the previous and the following stuff, imo.

aquagoat - 4-12-2017 at 20:40

Add this to the 5.1 stuff.

aquagoat - 28-12-2017 at 14:28

Damn, these 5.1 mixes are awesome! There's such better clarity, definition and spacialization, I can clearly hear stuff I'd never heard before. I'll probably get the Yes remixes in the future.

The Blues and the Abstract Truth. That's a good one. I've had that for a while. I got it when I found out about the Stolen Moments connection. Have you got any of Eric Dolphy's albums?

aquagoat - 11-2-2018 at 08:36

polydigm - 11-2-2018 at 14:13

So you've obviously listened to the track Straight Up and Down on Out to Lunch. Am I the only one that thinks that inspired the Memorial Barbecue?

aquagoat - 11-2-2018 at 20:00

Well, I guess we can establish links between the two but The Memorial barbecue has typical Zappa style traits. Dolphy's tune has a more classical jazz structure: theme/solos/theme, Zappa's track is more complex.
