Am currently half-way through Two Towers... I am really diging this book...
Anyone read it?

Pappawas1975 - 4-11-2005 at 10:36

Yes I just finished it actually! I loved it, was never really into the whole fantasy crap before, but was made to watch the movie....Which, I enjoyed, but shouldnt have seen before reading the books......The books are far better than the movie(s), However I did find the final book a little tedious towards the end though....

BBP - 4-11-2005 at 12:50

Yeah... it's a great book... shame all that commercialism of jigsaws and jewellery put me off at first. I'm reading it in English, and I have reached a point where it's gotten tough to understand, so my progress in the book is right now best described as sluggish.

BBP - 5-11-2005 at 20:55

Found my way back! I'm understanding it again.

Pappawas1975 - 5-11-2005 at 21:00

It does tend to do that, whether you are English or not, it veers off on tangents quite alot....

BBP - 5-11-2005 at 21:18

Thanks for the head-up, I was beginning to fear my English was letting me down.

Pappawas1975 - 5-11-2005 at 21:24

No, its a very heavy read at times!

BBP - 5-11-2005 at 21:45

Yes... I've just had the Isengard war, which is where I lost the road. Luckily Pippin has summorized his meeting with the Ents now (I really dig the Ents!), so I get it again.

Pappawas1975 - 5-11-2005 at 21:46

Of the trilogy, I found The Two Towers the best of them...

BBP - 5-11-2005 at 21:54

You think so?
Just bought part 3 for the amazing price of E. 1,95. New paperback!

Pappawas1975 - 5-11-2005 at 22:10

Thats a bargain. yeah, TT just seemed the most eventful, but I wont speak of the third book cos I dont want to ruin it for you...

BBP - 5-11-2005 at 22:18

Aw thanks... Someone gave away the Gandalf-thing in TT for me... I was pissed off.

Pappawas1975 - 5-11-2005 at 22:23

You do have to be careful! Its annoying when someone you know is reading something youve already read, cos its hard not to discuss it with them, the slightest bit of info can ruin the book for them

BBP - 5-11-2005 at 22:27

Yes! I had that when I finally got my sister to read Crime and Punishment. There was something weird about it that I wanted to discuss, and by the time she had finished it I forgot what it was.
Used to be my 2nd favourite book, but has disappeared from my top 3 after LOTR and "The Idiot" by Dostoyevski.

Pappawas1975 - 5-11-2005 at 22:30

Havent read Crime And Punishment or The Idiot Im afraid!....As for my favourite books - The Magus - John Fowles, American Psycho - Brett Easton Ellis, Naked Lunch - William Burroughs...off the top of my head anyway!

BBP - 5-11-2005 at 22:37

I read American Psycho, after I've seen the film. Nice, but really sick. Especially that bit with the cheese....

Pappawas1975 - 5-11-2005 at 22:39

yeah, its great.....Fortunately, I read the book before seeing the movie, and Im glad I did, cos I thought the film was a bit of a let down....I think the book is brilliantly written.

BBP - 5-11-2005 at 22:47

Indeed, though I did find it hard to get in to AP, bit of a shame.

Don't know John Fowles or Magus though, what's that book like?

Pappawas1975 - 5-11-2005 at 22:50

Very good, I think youd like it....A little hard for me to outline the plot, but if you see it somehwere cheap or in your library, pick it up.....Know what you mean re AP, its written so intensely that it is difficult at times, especially the chapters entirely dedicated to what he was wearing that night, or his record collection! Guess thats the point though...

BBP - 5-11-2005 at 22:55

I'll get after Magus... thanks!
I'm very fond of the Dutch author Bordewijk. He's got a great sense of humour, gives all his characters weird names, uses very odd words...

Pappawas1975 - 5-11-2005 at 22:57

Not heard or read any of his stuff Im afraid.....

BBP - 5-11-2005 at 23:11

His most famous novel is Karakter (Character). Mike Van Diem made a movie of it in 1997, which won an Oscar for best foreign-language film. That's my favourite film btw, seen it so many times...

Pappawas1975 - 5-11-2005 at 23:13

Cool....you do certainly learn something new everyday...

BBP - 5-11-2005 at 23:16

Any other must-reads? I travel by train a lot (to and from college, over a 51 min. distance), so I get a lot of time to read...

Pappawas1975 - 5-11-2005 at 23:17

Well, for usual suspense stuff, anything by Dan Brown is pretty good easy reading, The Dan Vinci Code, Angels And demons and Deception Point in particular......Also anything by Harlan Coben is good too.......

BBP - 5-11-2005 at 23:21

Harlan Coban? Never heard of that one...

Pappawas1975 - 5-11-2005 at 23:23

Hes actually a very good author, for the usual, slightly unchallenging, train read type books, he excellent.....Good twists to his plots...

BBP - 5-11-2005 at 23:29

Reading in trains is not too bad... especially when it's not rush hour... If you really want to get nauseous you could try reading in a bus.

Pappawas1975 - 5-11-2005 at 23:31

Ha!yeah, gotta admit, I dont really read that much whilst travelling....maybe a newspaper, but thats it....

BBP - 5-11-2005 at 23:35

Up to the recent discovery of tabloids, Dutch newspapers could only be read on large tables... not much for the train.

...I'd like to write an article about the overextensive use of ellipsises in forums...

Pappawas1975 - 5-11-2005 at 23:37

Ellipsises? Inform me, I dont know what you mean!

BBP - 5-11-2005 at 23:38

Ellipsis: ...

...You do learn something new every day ;)

Pappawas1975 - 5-11-2005 at 23:42

You command of the English language is greater than mine....!!!

BBP - 6-11-2005 at 12:25

Nah, just have a good dictionary!

BBP - 7-11-2005 at 20:33

Hope I'm not breaking your heart now... John Fowles has passed away, aged 79.

Pappawas1975 - 7-11-2005 at 21:17

Shit, didnt know that. Youre not breaking my heart though, thanks! I didnt know the guy, but RIP anyways, cos he wrote some good stuff...

BBP - 11-11-2005 at 21:37

Back to LOTR: I've finally finished Two Towers, which did not exactly cure my arachnophobia. Poor Frodo! :crying:

Pappawas1975 - 14-11-2005 at 10:34

I watched the two Towers movie again last night as it was on TV.....very good, but sadly the effects look dated already!.....IMO...

BBP - 14-11-2005 at 13:20

How did they do the Ents I wonder?

Pappawas1975 - 14-11-2005 at 17:27

Quite well actually! Quite charmingly done, almost as youd imagine them to be I guess....The movies are very loyal to the books all in all...

BBP - 14-11-2005 at 18:31

Just found some pics of them here:
http://web.mit.edu/kayla/Public/Backgrounds/

Not how I imagined them, but still nice!

Pappawas1975 - 14-11-2005 at 18:33

As I said, I made the mistake of watching the movies first, so my brain was tainted with the images of the actors already whilst reading...always better to do it the other way round....

Pappawas1975 - 14-11-2005 at 18:34

Oh, finished Moons books by the way...You are right, nothing spectacular!

BBP - 14-11-2005 at 18:35

Books? She wrote more than one?

Pappawas1975 - 14-11-2005 at 18:37

Sorry, my bad....I meant America The Beautiful......

BBP - 14-11-2005 at 18:39

I wonder what Ahmet's books are like... considering he HATES books according to RFZB...

Pappawas1975 - 14-11-2005 at 18:41

I didnt even know he wrote any.....!

BBP - 15-11-2005 at 00:26

He's recently sold a children's book to DISNEY!
It's about a brother and a sister who rescue their father from a monster. There's a thread about it on the Zappa-forum, on the TV/Film section I think.

Pappawas1975 - 15-11-2005 at 20:29

oh yeah, I did read about that......I mustve cared sooo much about it I forgot it upon reading about it....Sounds like a load of tosh.....

BBP - 15-11-2005 at 21:45

Wait! It was in What's Zappaning? In it, I dissed Disney for claiming quality whilst producing drool.

Either way, I did sense some analogy between this book (about a boy and a girl who discover they come out of a family of monster hunters, and set out to fight a monster) and a certain book series about a boy who finds out he comes from a family of wizards, and sets out to be a wizard (=Harry Potter).

Pappawas1975 - 17-11-2005 at 18:55

Yeah, it was on zappa.com somewhere.....Am about to embark on Finnegans Wake by James Joyce and A Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger.....

BBP - 17-11-2005 at 18:59

Finnegans Wake is nice.

I've purchased Tolkien's The Silmarillion, which I plan to read once I finally get through LOTR (I'm half-way through ROTK).

Pappawas1975 - 18-11-2005 at 16:44

Silmarillion is supposed to be good......Well, BB, I tried starting Finnegans last night, and to be honest with you I found it very difficult! I mean, didnt you struggle? Ill have to give it another go, but jesus, its heavy!!! Nearly finished Catcher In The Rye though, which is wonderful......It really is....
Re what I just posted, Catcher is good, but not great...Its supposed to be this literary classic, which is why I was interested to read it, but all of a sudden it just ends......Nothing THAT good at all......Had its moments, just when you thought something was going to happen, it didnt...Wierd....

[Edited on 19-11-2005 by Gojira1975]

BBP - 18-11-2005 at 18:53

Yeah... But I guess I'm used to something after all that Dostoevski I've been through. Though LOTR has taken me ages... but I'm nearly there. Funny how the books that have taken me most trouble to read have all ended up in my favourites-list.

Sorry this shouldve been in two seperate posts,....

BBP - 19-11-2005 at 16:02

That's OK Gojira... that sorta things happen to me all the time... just trying to get stuff done quickly.

Either way, I just finished LOTR! Yay!

Pappawas1975 - 25-11-2005 at 10:24

You started The Silmarrilion yet BB?

BBP - 25-11-2005 at 13:03

No, I've started on a book by Bordewijk that has been on my shelf for ages. It's a collection of stories, all take place in The Hague.

It's not a big book, hope to finish it soon.

Pappawas1975 - 25-11-2005 at 15:55

Im currently in between books at the moment.....Well, unless the Argos catalogue counts that is....

BBP - 3-12-2005 at 00:42

Just finished on that Bordewijk story collection... whew! Not as nice as his pre-WW2 work, shame.

Got started on Silmarillion... pretty complicated...

Pappawas1975 - 3-12-2005 at 18:11

I just finished Junky by William Burroughs, and am currently reading Modern Ranch Living, by an author whos name escapes me.....Next up Im gonna start Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson...

BBP - 3-12-2005 at 18:52

I've just started on Silmarillion. It reads like Virgil, Ovid or Homer. It's very nice though...

BBP - 7-12-2005 at 14:37

OK, so for St Nick, I got a huge stack of books: among them a collection of short short stories by Dave Eggers.
Anyone know him?

I'm planning to cast Silmarillion to the side. I read 4 pages yesterday, which took me ONE HOUR.:( I now feel stupid.

Pappawas1975 - 7-12-2005 at 16:27

Silmarrilion sounds heavy BB.....Nope, never heard of Dave Eggers Im afraid...

Pappawas1975 - 10-12-2005 at 22:28

Just finished 47th Street Black, again by an author whos name I cant remember. Great book. Now about to embark on "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee....

BBP - 10-12-2005 at 23:16

Sounds good...
I'm not putting away Silmarillion yet... managed to advance to the halfway-point last Thursday...

BBP - 17-12-2005 at 23:23

Now Sil's getting me real tired... just started on Eggers. Should've finished that by tomorrow, it's very, very thin.

Pappawas1975 - 17-12-2005 at 23:26

Best thing to do, go back to it when your refreshed and in the mood to get through more!

BBP - 17-12-2005 at 23:37

:) True, true...

BBP - 17-12-2005 at 23:39

Say if you're bored some time... Could you check that stuff in my sig?

BBP - 19-12-2005 at 14:33

Finished Eggers last night, thank goodness. Though I share his political ideas, his attempts at humour bug me.

BBP - 26-12-2005 at 23:32

Just seen the Two Towers movie.
Does the story of that really stick close to the book Goj? Because in that case, I didn't read the book properly. And where is Shelob?

Pappawas1975 - 27-12-2005 at 13:03

Not too closely, as the movie has to miss loads out or else it would be way too long!Thats why the books are better because they are alot more detailed...

BBP - 27-12-2005 at 23:06

THanks for the head-up... there were points in the book where I lost the plot, and the movie ditto...

Pappawas1975 - 31-12-2005 at 13:01

I watched The Return Of The King last night.......Even though its the movie of the third book, alot of stuff happens in this thats in the book of The Two Towers, if that makes sense......A nocel little scene in TROTK, when Gollum sets Samwise up to have eaten the Elven bread, isnt even in the book, but is a great little nuance to the plot........the trick is to enjoy the books and the movies as seperate entities....God only knows how the real LOTR nerds dissect each scene on their boards.......

BBP - 16-1-2006 at 23:17

Or how some folks I know play LOTR RPG, wear LOTR jewellery... I even encountered a lady named Eowyn.

Either way I made loads of progress in Sil in the past three days, I'm even beginning to understand what it's all about and I'm even enjoying myself a bit. Luckily I now understand the hostility between Elves and Dwarfs.

Pappawas1975 - 17-1-2006 at 10:57

I talked to guy about The Silmarillion, a real LOTR nut....he recommends it....Apparently it gives one a real insight into the whole LOTR / Tolkien world, but even he said it was very heavy duty....

Pappawas1975 - 17-1-2006 at 11:03

Currently reading Weaveworld, by Clive Barker.....Its ok, though it may be getting a little too "fantasy" for my liking.....Bring on the horror element....

I've read this book years ago, can't remember much of it other than the story is about some sort of magic carpet, but I remember liking it.

Not a big fan of most fantasy literature in general, I'm afraid. I read the LOTR trilogy in high school, but I'm not really inclined to go back and read it again.

[Edited on 17-1-2006 by Puptent]

BBP - 19-1-2006 at 23:28

:bouncing:
I finally finished Silmarillion!

And guess what? I like it!

Pappawas1975 - 20-1-2006 at 12:50

Well done BB.....! Congratulations......Im like 500 pages into Weaveworld at the moment, so I know how you felt - its like the damn thing is never ending sometimes.....

BBP - 20-1-2006 at 15:14

Ha! Yeah, there was always a coupla points where I just had it with the fantasy crap...

Now I've started wrestling through Ted Gioia's History Of Jazz, for college... It's the third time I have to read it, but I haven't actually read it yet. It's boring...

Class was nice last Thursday. We got to listen to Sun Ra.

Pappawas1975 - 20-1-2006 at 17:40

Sun Ra is always good to listen to....

Pappawas1975 - 22-1-2006 at 11:43

Currently reading -

BBP - 22-1-2006 at 15:13

That title is what I seem to be doing trying to pronounce the author's name. :drums:

BBP - 24-1-2006 at 14:46

ooh, BTW... Just started reading The Hobbit. Nice little book.

Pappawas1975 - 24-1-2006 at 14:51

Keep meaning to read The Hobbit....We have an old copy bumming around the house somewhere......have just started this however.....

BBP - 24-1-2006 at 14:52

And? How's that?

Pappawas1975 - 24-1-2006 at 14:54

Sorry, what I meant to say was that I am about to start it ( on my next work shift )....So, dont know yet!

BBP - 24-1-2006 at 14:58

Oh Ok... Can't get through Ted Gioia... recalled why I didn't read it the two times before...

Pappawas1975 - 24-1-2006 at 15:00

Ive done that before. Its like you think, well, Ill give it another shot, only to find that you were probably right in the first place! I should give Finnegans Wake another try, come to think of it....

BBP - 24-1-2006 at 15:06

That's a nice book, though indeed at times ununderstandable... Kinda like Dostoyevski's Memoires from a Basement.
No wait. That is entirely incomprehensible.

Pappawas1975 - 24-1-2006 at 15:08

I think weve discussed this before? Id heard sooo many blinding reviews and recommendations, and sat down to read it, and really didnt know what the fuck was going on........!!!I should have been more patient possibly....

BBP - 24-1-2006 at 15:09

Then again, maybe those reviewers didn't get the book, either...

Pappawas1975 - 24-1-2006 at 15:14

Well, there is that possibility I suppose.......

BBP - 24-1-2006 at 15:33

How was that Choke-book by the way? It looks interesting...

BBP - 24-1-2006 at 15:38

Side Note: I have now entered the Sheik Yerbouti status! Innit wonderful!

finished it and it was very good.....I think you may have to have at least a slight interest in football though, which I do, and it was an enjoyable book.....

I'd hate to say it but Gioia's book sucks.. always a bad sign when authors manage to make an interesting subject boring. Alyn Shipton's "New History of Jazz" is much better, more interesting and more enjoyable. Of course as a huge jazz fan, I'm pretty biased. It really helps to know the records and artists they are writing about.

BBP - 28-1-2006 at 00:17

Well I used to be a soccer fan, but it's very much diminished now... though I do support PSV Eindhoven strongly. Not that I know who is in it...

Still on Hobbit, hope to finish it tomorrow... Nice book, really.
