Another finding from The Black Page - The Zappa Page, posted July/18/22:
"I met Frank Zappa in October 1991. The Academy of the Arts in Berlin was planning to present his new compositions in Germany and I wanted to ask him if he had written any piano music which I could play on this occasion. In Zappa's living room we listened to each other's latest recordings. His newest works were composed on and performed by his computer, as their complexity rendered them very difficult to be written down and played by live musicians. He gave me the score of the piano piece, 'Ruth Is Sleeping', which had been written some years before but had not yet been performed. Its simultaneous use of different registers of the piano to achieve multiple combinations of major sevenths made it a interesting challenge to me. I also found that Zappa, by not indicating any dynamics or tempo changes, stimulated the performer to improvise the interpretation, as it were, evoking sometimes dreamy, sometimes tempestuous moments of Ruth's sleep. I performed the piece in Berlin on September 21, 1992." - Jeffrey Burns

Arthur Barrow & Robert Williams - Trouble Every Day (Frank Zappa cover)

Recorded in the early 1990s, unreleased since
Arthur "Tink" Barrow played bass for Zappa from 1978 to 1980, and was Zappa's Clonemeister from after the 1979 tour to the 1982 tour.
Robert Arthur Williams played drums in Captain Beefheart's band from 1978 to 1981.

Not much mental health left in my case, so i watched the entire program. I had to think the whole time, they hopefully didn't force FZ to do the same or at least paid him big $ (or both).
BTW, the imho least shitty song (i think it was #3, a punk type number) won the fewest votes ;-)

Pauline Butchers book is great and i recommend it .

Plook - 16-10-2023 at 18:56

I read that, it was amazing and since she wrote letters home nearly daily and had them, her descriptions of conversations and what people wore are in great detail. Thoroughly enjoyed that book.

polydigm - 18-10-2023 at 03:31

Yes, Pauline Butcher's book is a good read. I'm not totally convinced she needed to edit it.

ursinator2.0 - 20-11-2023 at 17:36

I finally uploaded her book onto my mobile and give it a read whenever i find a little bit time in between

Let's start the ceremonies for this years Zappadan

Lost Frank Zappa college radio interview from 1967 30 mins

This radio interview with Frank Zappa from November 13, 1967, was discovered back in 2017 after being thought lost. The quality is exceptional.
It is one of the more insightful interactions with Zappa. He explains the nuances of live vs recorded music, challenges in album releases, societal critiques in his work, and his strategic approach to music promotion and artistic expression. Zappa reflects on The Mothers of Invention's initial '67 European tour, his collaboration with The Monkees, and his surprisingly positive views on The Beatles.

Conducted by Joe Doll, a DJ at WCBN, the University of Michigan's student-run community radio station, the interview was thought lost but was found nearly five decades later.

Hmm ... Zappa's comment on blues purists would freak a few of his fans out ...

He was definitely a lot more politically idealistic back then in a way that I find refreshing, but at the same time also quite naive I think.

He also says he likes the music of the Beatles, just not those songs that were plastic renditions of blues songs.

Very interesting to contrast his standpoint pre and post the Rainbow attack.

Indeed, more than one surprise for me too. The only good thing he ever said about the Beatles (as far as I can remember) was a praise of the engineering and production of Abbey Road (not the music on it). I am a Beatles fan (at least for the second half of their career) so I am quite astonished ;-)

Even more surprising is his (indeed naive) enthusiasm that things could be changed for the better . Quite contrasting to the bitter irony and sarcasm as we use to know.
Once more FZ appears as a person full of contradictions and incidentally one of Pauline Butchers most recent videos goes about that:
Frank Zappa's contradictions

Frank Zappa in Amougies - Festival Actuel 1969 (VIDEO)
Haven't watched it entirely yet but it seems as if the audio and the video not necessarily match ;-)
Probably more interesting for the Beefheart appearances than those of FZ
So maybe just another case of Not sure what to make of this...............

polydigm - 23-4-2024 at 00:38

Yeah, I've listened to Zappa jamming with Pink Floyd at Amougies and although it's weird that he tried to deny it, I fully understand why he'd wish he hadn't tried it.

Eddie RUKidding - 23-4-2024 at 22:13

Yeah I've listened to PF and FZ previously - its a bad mix of Space rock and Chungas revenge lol

Maybe it should be called Chunga in Space

polydigm - 19-5-2024 at 23:44

That sofa cover is not bad. But I'm not sure I like that really floral piano style.

I've had a copy of that BBC documentary for a long time. My wife and I moved from London to Adelaide in 1992 and a little later my brother-in-law recorded it on VHS and posted me a copy. Later on I transferred it to a DVD, which also has transfers of The Amazing Mr Bickford and the Uncle Meat Movie. The less said about that last one, the better. That movie is probably even worse than The World's Greatest Sinner.

Eddie RUKidding - 20-5-2024 at 05:27

Yep the 2nd Vid is a good one

polydigm - 20-5-2024 at 14:09

Yeah, some of Bickford’s visions are pretty disturbing, but his stop motion stuff is incredible. I was going to say amazing, but you might have thought I was kidding. It’s uncanny how well Zappa’s music goes with it.

Eddie RUKidding - 20-5-2024 at 22:33

Bickfords stop motion looks more amasing after all these uears
Nothing wrong with Kidding around
