Any Primus-fans out here?

Pappawas1975 - 1-11-2005 at 17:24

Absolutely...Frizzle Fry is my favourite Primus album....

And mine... Les is sooo deliciously off-key on the title song...

Can't wait for their new album!

Master_of_Reality - 2-11-2005 at 02:09

Primus is okay, but I prefer Fugazi. :)

Penis - 2-11-2005 at 07:10

What does Fugazi have to do with Primus?

And Primus > Fugazi.

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 14:04

Fugazi?

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 14:06

Fugazi very overrated too....

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 14:16

That could be why I never heard of them...

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 14:21

They had their moments, but they never rocked my world at all....

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 14:26

Just heard them... now I have a headache.

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 14:30

Ha!....they supported Motley Crue in London last June, so did intend to check them out.....but unfortunately we were in the pub....

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 14:33

Perhaps you were better off in the pub;-)

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 14:35

Well, we definitely were! Couldnt see shit, as this was a temporary venue, and our seats were crappy, so all in all it was a wasted day! Well, actually not really at all, cos we had a solid nine hours drinking, and had a great time, so I guess it was worth it.....

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 14:42

When I saw Primus I couldn't see shit either... only Les's fingers which had me hypnotized. They were great.

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 14:44

Cool...never seen Primus unfortunately...

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 14:59

Don't worry, their new album will be out in 2006... so maybe they might just cross the ocean.

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 15:00

If they do I will go...

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 15:10

Me too, they rocked supreme! They came in the middle of the test week at our school, had a German and a Geography test the day after. Don't know how badly I did on them.

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 15:11

Yeah, but you only live once.....If you hadnt have gone, you wouldve regretted it, and probably done far worse in your tests....

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 15:20

Exactly! I wasn't really into Primus when I went, but when I came back, they sorta became my world...

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 15:21

Hey! I've now entered the State of Apostrophe!

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 15:23

Dont you feel real special now??

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 15:26

No, but I now have Apostrophe (') in my head, which is great at any time.

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 15:27

Well, there is that I suppose, cant be a bad thing.....

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 15:38

It's gone already... just went up to get Animals. I once got my pop music teacher to play "Mary the Ice Cube" in class.

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 15:43

Havent heard that?Good?

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 15:51

Great! Only five songs on it, but still a very, very good album. Beats Antipop any time, it's a bit more like Punchbowl with the beautiful melodic bass lines. Sgt. Pilcher is a bit annoying after a while, but it has a great guitar solo.

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 15:53

I find that with Primus, they get annoying in certain parts, but after a while it all just grows on you....I really should get more of their records though, as I am only familiar with Frizzle and Sailing.....

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 15:59

I have all their records... My sister has about half of them. I once lent her my copy of Frizzle, which she lost.:crying:
Try to get your hands on Pork Soda, but leave AntiPop, Miscellaneous Debris and Rhinoplasty on the shelf.

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 16:00

I heard PS was a good one, also The Brown Album was recommended to me.....

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 16:07

Pork is great! Relatively dark when you compare it to other albums, some of their more metal-work. It has My Name Is Mud, which is pretty much standard repertoire.

Brown is great too, it has a very warm sound. It does lack an album theme, and since it's a Rancho Relaxo album, Les tends to overdo the vocals, some of the songs on it are ruined by his singing.

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 16:10

yeah, his vocals are an aquired taste, but I like em most of the time....Will check those albums out....

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 16:11

You won't regret it... I love Les's voice normally, he sounds just like Larry Laffer.

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 16:12

Isnt Suck On This meant to be pretty good too?

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 16:18

Yeah! It's live. But most of the songs on there are also on Frizzle, one is on Antipop, one on Pork Soda, one on Sausage's Riddles Are Abound Tonight...
It's interesting to hear Les's voice on it. He has such trouble staying in tune.

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 16:19

Didnt know it was a live album......Could be another option....

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 16:26

Rhinoplasty has two live songs too, one is the rock version of Tommy the Cat. It has an awesome drum solo by Brain.

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 16:29

Tommy The Cat is a great song....You familiar with any Praxis stuff? Brain plays with them too....Dont think theyre a working band, but its Bill Laswell, Buckethead and Brain Mantia....i have two of their albums, both of which are pretty cool.....

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 16:32

Don't know Praxis, but I do have C2B3. Got that played in class, too.

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 16:34

Not heard C2B3......Zillatron is another Buckethead / Brain thing too, very cool album.....

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 16:36

C2B3 is nice, has a few strong good songs. Unfortunately it also has Gabby Lala.

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 16:36

Gabby Lala?

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 16:40

http://www.gabbylala.com

Hearing this suddenly made Les fall from his pedestal. If THAT can make an album with Les Claypool, then I can win the Eurovision Song Contest.

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 16:46

Will check it out....

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 16:52

Are you sure? She advertises herself as a cross between Yoko Ono and Hello Kitty.

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 16:52

Sorry to say, but I actually think its pretty good!!!

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 16:52

... Let's just say there's only little doubt about taste. She gives me a headache... kinda like that Fuz-band we discussed earlier.

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 16:55

Well, each to their own! I dont think Im gonna rush out and buy it or anything, but I am partial to Japanese madness Im afraid!!!

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 16:56

Really? You like Dragonball Z? I'm not a manga fan, but I like that.

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 16:58

Yeah man, love all that! Even Pokemon when Im in the mood......Lived in Japan for seven years, so am kinda connected to the place!

BBP - 2-11-2005 at 17:03

You used to live there? Cool!

Pappawas1975 - 2-11-2005 at 17:04

It was cool...gotta go back someday! If ever you get a chance to go, do it, the place is great.....

Pappawas1975 - 3-11-2005 at 12:12

I was actually wrong about the Motley show, it was Killing joke and not Fugazi who supported them...my mistake, am always getting them two mixed up....

Puptent - 3-11-2005 at 15:03

When are these guys coming to Europe? Saw them once on the Tales From The Punchbowl tour, that was great. I kinda lost track of them when 'The Brown Album' came out, but the DVD releases have rekindled my interest in all things Claypool. :)

BBP - 3-11-2005 at 16:32

Soon, we hope... Their last European tour plan was for Summer 2000, which didn't take place.

Pappawas1975 - 3-11-2005 at 18:21

Hopefully anyway! They dont seem to be too popular over here in the UK, which is a shame, and usually puts off bands coming over......

BBP - 4-11-2005 at 23:24

... They had a few dates set for that tour... one in Tilburg, and one in UK. Don't worry Gojira, they'll be back!

Puptent - 5-11-2005 at 14:35

I get the impression that Claypool is pretty big on the US Jamband scene nowadays.. probably plays for huge audiences there, instead of small clubs in Europe. I saw Primus in Nighttown Rotterdam in '95 I think (whoah, that's 10 years ago, I'm growing old.. :( ).

BBP - 5-11-2005 at 20:38

That would have been September 18th, 1995, with Korn opening.

Currently Les is working with the Fancy Band, featuring Gabby Lala (a Yoko Ono replica, music OK but that singing! ) on sitar.

[Edited on 5-11-2005 by BBP]

Puptent - 6-11-2005 at 13:32

That's right. Korn was the opening act, thought they sucked at the time... (still do).

BBP - 7-11-2005 at 00:10

Aww... poor dear...
I saw Primus in July 1998 in Eindhoven. Skeleton Key opened. I didn't see much of them because when I arrived at the Effenaar I discovered I forgot my ticket...:umm:

BBP - 7-11-2005 at 00:11

Just remembered you must have seen Herb as drummer... I saw Brain. He did one helluva drum solo!

Puptent - 7-11-2005 at 13:01

Yeah, Herb was still behind the kit in '95. We were standing direct in front of the stage, watching Les' amazig fingers while dodging all the crowdsurfers behind us.

Can't remember all that much from the setlist, I think they played lots of tunes from the 'Punchbowl' album, as well as a couple of earlier songs. I do remember that they played 'Harold of the rocks', which was one of my favorite Primus tunes then. :)

BBP - 7-11-2005 at 14:07

Harold's great, one of my favourites...
When I went, they played Kalamazoo, Sailing the Seas of Cheese, Grandpa's Little Ditty, something else with the upright, Tommy the Cat, Those Damned Blue Collar Tweekers which was brutally interrupted by a dance contest, My Name Is Mud, and loads of stuff I didn't recognize.
When MNIM played, my sister started singing along loudly, so I joined in. At that point, Les lifted his sunglasses and looked very sharply in our direction, I'm sure he looked at me. I looked down on myself and discovered I was wearing a yellow T-shirt with a huge Minnie Mouse on it... very embarrassing. After the song, I made my way to the T-shirt seller.

BBP - 15-11-2005 at 00:24

Can't remember his name... but some Dutch guy plays a nine-string bass! How big your hands have to be for that neck!

scallopino - 19-11-2005 at 15:21

PPRRRRIIIIMMMMUSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!! nup never heard of em.

My impression of the bass-line for Jerry:

a-hem: "Dakow-gu-dakow, dum-dum gudagadow".

I have always had a dream to be in a primus-like band, who could go in some "Battle of the bands" thing and just mercilessly murder every other band (figuratively speaking). They would all be doing their gay emo-punk shit and then we would come on... ahh that would be so cool.

Side note: this is what i play :drums:

Actually that little pineapple guy sort of looks like me. It has my eyes.

scallopino - 19-11-2005 at 15:24

BBP, have you heard the Sausage album? The bass-line on "Girls For Single Men" is one of my all time favourites.

BBP - 19-11-2005 at 15:59

'Fraid not... I've seen it lying around once, but I didn't get it out of... ehm... feduciary reasons.
My favourite bass line is SouthBound Pachyderm, which I attemt to play on good ol' sparkly Alonzo.

[Edited on 19-11-2005 by BBP]

mutronboy - 22-11-2005 at 17:45

Ooh...BBP..you've got a Hamer...nice?

I've been spending a bit of time on the Hamer forum...it's fun

I've got the horn for a Hamer...maybe an early Sunburst or a Newport

Anyway...I like Primus..I've got about 5 albums plus the Sausage album

I mainly listen to Frizzle Fry and the one with the cover tunes (Rhinoplasty?)
I haven't had a chance to listen to 'em all properly yet 'cos I got 'em as a job lot
(I'm an auction hound)

I had the Brown album, but I thought it was a bit samey, I think I turfed it

I bought the DVD, too...that's a ripper!!

Humour does belong in music...that's why I like 'em

BBP - 22-11-2005 at 18:21

There's two albums, well, one album and one EP, with cover songs. Rhinoplasty with The Thing That Should Not Be, and Miscellaneous Debris with some Peter Gabriel, some Meters, some XTC, some Pink Floyd and some Residents.

I felt I got ripped off with the Hallucino Genetics DVD: the images are very tough to see. I wanted to see Claypool playing SouthBound Pachyderm, but you just can't see those fantastic hands of his.
The "Animals Should Not Try To Act Like People" DVD is splendid, though.

Either way, I have all Primus albums, all Possessed albums, Hallucino Genetics DVD, Oysterhead, Highball w/t Devil, a Primus poster, two Primus t-shirts, 5 Primus coasters, 26 Primus beerglasses, 1 Primus beerbottle, 2 Primus toothbrushes... I used to be a diehard Primus-fan before I decided to listen to their influences and encountered FZ.

How's Sausage? I'd like to have that, but it's not around much.

mutronboy - 22-11-2005 at 19:56

Hi BBP,

Seems like you like Primus a bit....

I'll see if I can find that Sausage album...did you ever see the videoclip?
They were riding bicycles suspended in mid-air...
and their heads were all sticking through a big parachutey thing...it was wacky

I had some other Les Claypool album, too...I'll see if I can find it...
edit: I noticed you mentioned it...Highball with the Devil...heh

[Edited on 22-11-2005 by mutronboy]

BBP - 22-11-2005 at 22:26

I don't like Highball too much... most songs get annoying half-way.
Never seen the Sausage-clip I'm afraid...

Puptent - 23-11-2005 at 17:53

I still have the Sausage album on tape somewhere, haven't heard it in years but I remember that it was quite ok. I didn't like the "Brown Album" all that much when it came out, but I've warmed up to that one over the years.

A friend of mine is also a hardcore Primus collector, so I've heard most of the official stuff. Most disappointing Claypool release must be that "Live frogs" album where he's covering Pink Floyd's "Animals' note by note. Totally pointless release.

[Edited on 23-11-2005 by Puptent]

BBP - 23-11-2005 at 19:04

I've heard lots of bad stuff from the live Frogs. A lot of fellow Primus-fans I know claim they have bootlegs that have better quality.

I've only seen the live Frog set once in store. The CDs cost an astonishing 60 guilders each.

Puptent - 24-11-2005 at 13:10

I'll ask my friend where he bought his.. should be able to get them cheaper than that.

BBP - 27-11-2005 at 00:09

I'm not too interested in the Frogs... heard some of their stuff and thought it sucked big time. They even messed up Wynona's Big Brown Beaver.

no surely it's more like" dakka-dakka-der-dak-dak-der-der":lol:ha ha

vivien, i really tried singing your version but i just can't match it up! Sorry!

BBP - 4-12-2005 at 11:54

DA-ke-da-DA-ke-da-Dee-Dee-Dee-dooh-dooh-dooh...

scallopino - 5-12-2005 at 03:59

Yeah, i can hear that! :)

BBP - 6-6-2006 at 18:25

Just got Les Claypool's Of Whales And Woe.
You know in pretty much every case (yes, even Dweezil on Them or Us) I hate it when musicians bring in their kids to let 'em do some stuff. On this album, there's a song called "Back off turkey" that has Les's tykes playing percussion and marimba (Cage has just turned 9, Lena will turn 8 this August). Sounds very annoying. Also, the kids did the album illustrations. Well, suppose love blinds...

Listened to the first 8 tracks now... It's a bit Highball, some songs are great but last too long, others are plain noise...

On the plus side, Gabby Lala is not singing on it. Also Skerik's sax is cool!

aquagoat - 8-6-2006 at 08:47

What about Rhinoplasty, Bonny, is it good ?

BBP - 8-6-2006 at 10:03

I like it! Lots of Primus fans don't though. There's:
XTC's Scissor Man, which I love,
Peter Gabriel's Family and the Fishing Net which I don't like much,
Silly Putty which is funny and funky,
Amos Moses, Les's first record,
Police's Behind My Camel which is good,
Too Many Puppies remake which is kinda funny,
Metallica's The Thing That Should Not Be which I think is nice,
and 2 live tracks of Tommy the Cat and Bob's Party Time Lounge.
Tommy has a kick-ass drum solo, also a touch of The Awakening by the Reddings. Bob's Party Time Lounge has a very nice sound to it as well.

There's an enhanced version you can buy. It should work on most computers (enhanced CD of Tales from the Punchbowl doesn't work on most PCs). On it is, among others, the video of The Devil Went Down To Georgia by Festus Clamrod and the El Sobrante Twangers (Les, Ler, Brain and 2 violinists). Brilliant little claymation.

If you can get it at a good price (I bought my copy in France, in Aix-en-Provence at a CD fair for 89 Franks, which is decent) you may wanna go for it.

aquagoat - 8-6-2006 at 10:51

scallopino - 8-6-2006 at 11:01

Have you got the sausage album yet?

aquagoat - 8-6-2006 at 12:38

Yes, I bought it years ago. Not bad, not great.

[Edited on 8-6-2006 by aquabot]

BBP - 8-6-2006 at 15:02

You got Sausage? Been looking for that one for years...

That'd be sweet! Anything I can get you in return?

You shouldn't ask that kind of question bb, you wouldn't if you knew me well.:D We'll see that later.

Just PM me your complete address so that the CD may go directly to you without having to pass between my hands.

Pappawas1975 - 9-6-2006 at 09:45

Referring to that Geddy Lee grating vocals thread elsewhere on here, I am currently listening to Frizzle Fry, and gotta say that Claypools vocals are very annoying at the moment!
I think it may be too early in the morning.....

BBP - 9-6-2006 at 10:15

On Frizzle Fry song? Yeah it's pretty off-key! But to be honest, I think it's more funny than annoying. Besides, if you think that's off-key, turn to Tommy the Cat on Suck On This.

Personally I prefer Les's old vocals above his trained and studio-edited voice on Punchbowl and beyond.

PS Aqua you've got mail!

aquagoat - 9-6-2006 at 15:23

OK BBP, I'll do it tonight.

Meant the whole thing really. It got to Too Many Puppies and I couldnt take anymore!

BBP - 9-6-2006 at 19:49

That's nasty... I know they're horrible, but it somehow suits the music. Too Many Puppies on Videoplasty sucks, there Les is somewhat trying to sing opera-style or something.
It's like listening to Symphony & Metallica where James Hetfield is using his I-took-singing-class voice to perform Master of Puppets or Enter Sandman. That's so wrong.

aquagoat - 9-6-2006 at 19:56

I agree with that, though sometimes out of tune and grating, Les's vocals suit the music giving it a Tom&Jerry tinge, I think. I wouldn't expect any other type of voice with this music, which is not the case with Rush.

BBP - 9-6-2006 at 20:39

He does sound like a cartoon character. And even looks like one!

aquagoat - 9-6-2006 at 20:56

His voice IS the sea of cheese to me, if you see what I mean. His voice makes me think about molten "Gruyere".:freak:

[Edited on 10-6-2006 by aquabot]

BBP - 10-6-2006 at 09:00

Ha! He reminds me of Larry Laffer; probably because I was playing Leisure Suit Larry 7 when I first heard his voice... Actually on clips where you hear him speak, he sounds quite normal...

aquagoat - 10-6-2006 at 18:41

What could a man who looks like that sound like anyway ? Robert Plant ?:D
