Given Zappa's knack for mimicking styles that he either admired or wanted satirise, it wouldn't make sense if a piece in memoriam to Eric Dolphy sounded nothing like him.

Haven't listened to this one yet. Hope it's better than Green Naugahyde.

At times it's decidedly un-Primus. Haven't decided what I think of it yet.

Naugahyde has some great songs though!

Haven't received it yet, but I'm pretty excited, especially about the video footage.

Well, actually, there's no video footage, I don't know where I got this idea from, but anyway, I've listened to the first three cds, and it's really good. The playlists are pretty varied, with not too many repeated tracks. Some arrangements differ from the original songsso it makes it pretty interesting. And the sound is great. I think it's worth the money, so far.

Something Japanese, so far with drums...

On the subject of Japan, I just bought this:

Imagine Meeting You Here
Alister Spence & Satoko Fujii Orchestra Kobe

I heard the tail end of the first track on ABC Jazz radio the other day and then heard samples, which were very interesting, from all five tracks on iTunes and decided to buy the album. I'll let you know how it goes.

On the subject of France, a few months ago I bought this:

Melody Makers II
Pierrejean Gaucher, Clément Petit & Cédric Affre

I got into Pierrejean Gaucher via his band called Zappe Zappa and thought I'd investigate him further. I really like this album.

LeBocal is another band I got into through their Zappa cover album, Oh No!...Just Another Frank Zappa Memorial Barbecue. A while ago I bought one of their albums of their own material:

Bist du froh?
LeBocal

I like it.

On the subject of revivals, I just bought this the other day:

Live In San Francisco
John McLaughlin & The 4th Dimension & Jimmy Herring & The Invisible Whip

A selection of Mahavishnu Orchestra material played live recently. It's pretty good, although the mix gets a bit stodgy here and there.

Also recently purchased, inspired by a Zappateers post:

The Soldier's Tale - Narrated by Roger Waters
Roger Waters: Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival Musicians

I've always liked this Stravinsky composition and mostly listen to instrumental only versions, but this is quite entertaining.

Having decided to buy these last two from amazon.com.au, a third purchase would take me over the free postage barrier, so also bought:

MORE
Pink Floyd

I haven't heard this album for decades. I once had it on Vinyl. It's actually not that bad.

Bought 3 second-hand CDs today, €1 for the lot:

Era
(I have no idea what this is besides a horrible mess. The choir doesn't seem all bad until the fake drums kick in.)

Classical CD with: Peter Schat "Etudes for piano and orchestra" op 39 and Luciano Berio's "Sinfonia" (BB fave) conducted by Edo de Waart, whose name you may have spotted in some of the Zappa-articles on this forum.
So far the Schat seems interesting, I'm looking forward to this interpretation of Sinfonia.

Classical CD with Takemitsu - November Steps and Messiaen - Et Exspecto Resurrectionem.
