ZPZ guest wishlist

So far there has been Steve Vai, Nappy, Bozzio and Ray White. When I saw them in Melbourne in November 07 it was Vai and Ray White. It looks like it's going to be Ray again in 2009. As much as I love Ray White, I would love to see someone else this year.

Who would you like to see? Who are real possibilities? Who, for various reasons, will never even be considered by Dweezil and Co?

I would love to see Ike Willis, George Duke, Chad Wackerman and, possibly more than anyone else, RUTH! I don't know the relationship status between the ZFT and these people (although Ruth featured in the 'Classic Albums' program).

I'd love to see Ruth! Although ZPZ has a great percussionist in Billy Hulting. I know that Ruth actually went to ZPZ rehearsals even before their first tour. Ruth was amazed at Billy's ability to play with 4 mallets, and Billy was amazed at Ruth's ability to play all that complicated material with only 2 mallets!

For non-FZ-related guest stars... well... I'd love to see Les Claypool with them, that YouTube vid is to drool over. And I'd love to hear Tim Curry sing Yo Cats.

Yeah, Billy is extremely great. He doesn't quite have the physique to pull off that superhero costume Ed Mann wore though. Which video with Les Claypool are you drooling over?

I have a question: Napoleon was involved with Project/Object, so how did he come to play with ZPZ?

Another very in-form and excellent guest would be Mike Keneally.

Les has that Whamola there... I believe a fan built it for him. He sure mastered it!

Not sure about Napi... maybe he just asked and the Zappas didn't know... but he's now been forbidden to perform any Zappa tune.

or they asked him.
I don't remember where I read this but I heard NMB asked for more money and they said no. So he said, see ya.

Yeah! It'd be great to hear him sing Inca Roads... Belew brought shivers down my spine with Lites... and Napi with Florentine Pogen... it's just so right hearing them sing their own songs!

I don't think George Duke will ever play with ZPZ. They'd have to work it out with his manager: Herb Cohen.

Man I would love to see Belew with them. I don't know what has happened between him and the ZFT since that fiasco with road manager guy or whatever it was.

You say that, MTF, but if you cast your mind back to the first ZPZ tour, George was due to do it, even to the point of having dates put aside for ZPZ on his tour dates page on his official site....

So, stranger things have happened!

I would love to see Ike WIllis, of course.

Adrian Belew apologized to both Dweezil and André, and he said he should never have promised to Dweezil that André wouldn't be near the stage. Poor Adrian...

Well, I guess that's good for our chances of maybe seeing him with ZPZ, BUT it does sound a little bit like sucking up and unfair. An awful position to be in though.

Wow! I didn't know that. Does anyone know what happened? Obviously it can't have been that he couldn't do the dates...

Sucking up? Adrian?
No, his letter really was one of peacemaking. Very sweet.

Quote:
on Thursday, November 13, 2008, Adrian Belew wrote:
since I'm on this train of thought, I would like to clear up one more thing.
a few months back I was asked by dweezil zappa to join the zappa plays zappa
show in canada for an onstage performance of flakes, the dylan imitation.
in an email to me dweezil also asked that I make certain
andre cholmondeley, my tour manager and guitar tech,
would be persona non grata.
in other words dweezil did not want to see andre at the show.
there is an ongoing battle between the zappa family and andre.

I told dweezil I would try my best to insure he would not see andre.
but I put it off and put it off and I want to make this clear:
I did not say anything to andre.
andre had no idea that he should keep out of dweezil's sight.

why did I not keep my word to dweezil?
andre is a valued member of my crew and a friend.
I know how much he loves frank's music.
I could not bring myself to hurt andre's feeling.

naturally, the worst happened.
andre was banished from watching the show
by one of the zappa crew members
and things got a bit ugly.

I want to apologize to both andre and dweezil.
I should have told andre or should never have
given my word in the first place.

on a happier note:
when I walked onstage to sit in with zappa plays zappa
armed with only a harmonica and my pitiful dylan voice,
I suddenly felt transported back to my time onstage with frank.
dweezil so resembles his father in looks and in voice
that I had to do a double take to be sure where I was.

it was a very special moment for me
which brought back a flood of memories.

I miss frank.

Excellent! Actually, he doesn't suck up to anyone and makes it clear he wasn't on anyone's side, just caught in the middle.

Aaron Arntz has quit ZPZ to pursue his own career.

I'm a bit gutted about it as I'm an Aaron fan, but it does make room for another guest. Rumours are that Chick Corea will play with them.

Thing is, I have an April 2006 recording of the first public performance of ZPZ; with Chick Corea; and that wasn't too stellar, that performance.

Chick is booked up with The Five Peace Band until at least the beginning of May.

Dweezil has known about Aaron's departure since December. He certainly has a plan for how to deal with this. In the short term, the plan is probably just to close ranks and move on.

Don't worry Bonny. By the time they get to Eindhoven, you probably won't be able to tell that one of them is missing...
