Admin Powers: Activate!!

Dear fellow forumers,
Some of you may have noticed the arrival of a new member yesterday. They may also have noticed the swift removal of this user.

This might concern you: after all I'm not one to delete users at will.
Since the user's e-mail address was invalid, deleting him was according to my forum regulations. I am fairly certain this character was posing as another Zappa forum member; primarily since that other forum member wouldn't come here if he'd get paid for it.

I'm very sad online communities have come to this; and it's even sadder this character has now picked my forum for it.

It was fairly clear to me that that guy was not Trendmonger. If Trendy came here, God forbid, he would not use a urinal as an avatar and the tone of the guy was clearly sarcastic and really just a parody of Trendy. I have to admit that I laughed, after I realised it wasn't Trendy, mostly from relief.

No I'm one of Trendy's targets. Not sure how that got started and am not inclined to look it up, but the Read 'em And Sleep picture I made back in the day may have contributed to that.

I'm not even sure what happened to ol' Turdmuncher. I know he became a regular at Dweezil's site, and as far as I'm concerned he can have it. They're both so boring, I figure they deserve each other.

:singer: blah blah blah...

Yeah he roams the place there, calls himself Ambassador At Large. Seems they're both happy with it.

Deleted two fake accounts. One called himself GuybrushThreepwood, after the main character from the Monkey Island gaming series. Wonder if it's the same loser. Went to IP banning.

There are at least two more scumbags lurking today.

Three, all removed. Since neither had a valid e-mail address, maybe I should get a need-for-registration-email attached.

Please Punky, don't reply to spammers! There's no need, we see them anyway if we're not asleep and chuck their butts as soon as we can.

Yes, I replied to one only to say "Scumbag", then realised I shouldn't and deleted that post.

Whoops, forgot to say Bonny, that I think you should require an email for registration that is only activated after you actually read it. After all, the membership here is not huge and it doesn't change that often, so it would probably be less work to manually register people on invitation than having to clean up after spammers who take advantage of automatic registration.

That's what I was thinking. Thing is, it's not a matter of changing settings. I'd probably have to find an add-on.

Isn't automatic registration, or whatever it's called, something you can just turn off? Then all you have to do is have an announcement thread that tells people who are interested in registering how to contact you.

Yeah I could, and it's what I used before. But what we were so happy about was, that with the new upgrade, we had CAPTCHA so we didn't need to use that system anymore; it's quite inaccessible. I made the CAPTCHA a little bit harder, hope it helps.

Deleted one "member" who signed up today. He'd made one post, and although his e-mail and his web address were legitimate, his IP wasn't.

Bonny! Kill logoiweb with extreme prejudice. The spammers who make like they're friendly are the worst.

He's gone now. I've temporarily locked the sign up until the flood dries, since it's the only weapon against him. The past three spammers I've deleted (one today, two yesterday) all had non-existent IPs so IP banning is out of the question.

Re-open sign up just in case the interview I posted will attract more potential users.
