Primus 16 June 2015: Utrecht

In A World Of Pure Imagination...

You know it's a Primus-set when all the spotlights have faces.

The stage in the first act of the show was much more subdued than the shows in Eindhoven in 2011 and 2012. A beautiful 5-string upright indicates the place where I end up standing: 2nd row, in front of Les.

The band walks on. It's Tim on the drums, amazing! He's gotten pudgy since his hospitalization but his drumkit promises a lot of good stuff. And that good stuff starts straight away with Those Damn Blue Collar Tweekers! The crowd sings and bumps away in seconds, Les's solo is mindblowing...

Then comes a newer song, Moron TV.

"What the hell do we have here?" Les opens banter with the crowd. The coffee shop story gets a lot of cheers, there's a recording of it on one of the vids.

Next a song he admits is hard to play: Wynona's Big Brown Beaver!

After that a song I'm learning to play, my position close to Les is very convenient now: American Life.
Les: "And he looks to the statue of liberty..."
Crowd: "Liberty, liberty...."
Les talks before the solo about how Ler is often confused with Jesus, with his long hair, facial hair, striped shirt and telecaster look. Ler: "Jesus wore it all the time." After that Ler gave a flaming solo!

After American Life, Les brings up the houselights and divides the audience in Les-side and Ler-side. He tries to start off a call-and-response, but it doesn't work. In the mean time he has switched to his resonator bass for Over The Falls and Lee Van Cleef.

After Lee, he switches bass again, to a fretless 6-string! And bursts into the Over The Electric Grapevine intro!
My Name Is Mud and Jerry are the last two songs he plays before the break. The curtains of the stage are closed so the new set can be built.

It's quite a change! The subdued set has become a candyland with giant mushrooms and lollipops, Tim is in a charming technician's ensemble, the cellist in suit with ruches and a mask, the percussionist dressed as Grandpa Charlie, Larry in a cute bow tie, and Les with gorgeous purple jacket and mask, as they kick off. Before Pure Imagination starts, Les switches to the red wig and top hat. Screens at the back show scenes from the movie. During the Oompa songs, two men in Oompa Loompa outfits with gigantic masks come on and dance. Even the roadies wear a costume.
Highlights are the invariable solos, particularly the percussionist harvests great applause every time. Golden Ticket gets quite some sing-along. The magic boat ride is accompanied with creepy lights. Ler's break-out song I Want It Now is hot! Les switches between resonator and 5-string upright.

The encore starts with Too Many Puppies, and there was much singing and a smiling Les! The moshpit is getting rowdy and I get pushed over a few times.
Duchess gets some heavy soloing!

Last song of the encore is Here Come The Bastards, which is accompanied by a film of an Oompa Loompa in Utrecht, see vid!
During... I think Duchess, a guy manages to jump on stage and touch Les. A roadie quickly whisks him away. After the show I hear a lot of talk among the safety guards on how this could've happened.

What a night!
