That she is. ;-) I bet she gets some action at the athletes village..

scallopino - 15-2-2006 at 12:19

Skiing looks damn hard! Figure skating looks damn stupid!

scallopino - 16-2-2006 at 04:53

Luge:

Gee, who would have thought sliding backwards down a narrow half pipe on a piece of fibreglass at 140kph could be so dangerous? :umm:

Pappawas1975 - 16-2-2006 at 12:29

So, not into the Winter Olympics then guys?....Change the avatar viv......

BBP - 16-2-2006 at 23:02

Even had my picture taken with Carl Verheijen...

scallopino - 17-2-2006 at 01:58

Wow BBP! I think i might have seen that guy last night. The Dutch men and women are very fast skaters!

And my heartfelt thanks to the Canadian guy who won gold for Australia in moguls!

BBP - 17-2-2006 at 18:57

Did you see Carl fall in the team chase? Along with Sven Whatshisname?

Well, here's me and Sven: (I'm on the left)

scallopino - 18-2-2006 at 07:57

I didn't see the fall but i heard about it and was surprised last night when they weren't in the running for the medals.

Where were these photos taken? And why is there a giant green umbrella behind ya?

Have you seen that Skeleton thing? It's even more dangerous than the front ways one. Crazy. :duh:

BBP - 18-2-2006 at 13:56

Yeah that always scares the hell out of me... But I'm more a fan of figure skating to be honest... especially Yevgeni Plushenko...

Them pics is an action of the Dutch railways. If you're at the station in Utrecht, you can find a lot of cosiness going on, a nice little terrace with umbrellas, a bad band, TV screens showing sports and the news, a snowboarding PC game which is very difficult, a table with magazines, a bar...
And someone taking pictures of you... He'll put your favourite skater behind you and put it on the Net so everyone can see!

Of course they didn't have Jochem Uytdehaeghe... so the first time they asked me, the photographer chose Carl Verheijen for me (didn't know who that was). The second time, I asked for someone who didn't fall... Apparently the choice is between Sven and Carl... so I took Sven this time.

scallopino - 19-2-2006 at 12:59

Hah, you're very lucky! My two train stations are the worst places in the entire world. I would rather be at the gaza strip! I would rather be in France!

I saw another Dutch skater this just before on tv. His last name started with a G. Sort of like an extended version of "Grotius" or something... I don't think he got through though.

BBP - 19-2-2006 at 16:05

Stefan Groothuis, probably, 1000 metres.

Yeah Utrecht is a nice station, loads of stores, so there's lots to do if your train is running late... Biggest station in Holland allegedly...

scallopino - 20-2-2006 at 12:38

Yeah, Stefan Groothuis. That's the guy.

I don't think i would mind waiting for trains that much if i lived in the city. But i live in the country (the opposite to city), and there's nothing to do except wait! They are frequently late or cancelled, and because it's a country line, it's like 25 minutes plus for the next train! :crying: :crying:

Ohh, did you see the american chick in snowboarding who, at the last 20 metres of the gold medal race, attempted a grab (because she was so far in front) and stacked it! And then the person who was like 50 metres behind won!!!:roll::lol:

BBP - 20-2-2006 at 19:54

Nope, didn't see that. Didn't watch too much TV on sports... it all seems to be skating out here.
Who won the snowboarding then?

Me in action...

BBP - 21-2-2006 at 12:06

Only works if you have Windows Media Player BTW... sorry...

scallopino - 22-2-2006 at 04:22

Ha! That's great! How was it made?

It's amazing how there are all these people in the crowd cheering, and then when the view shifts to you there are no people in the stands! :P

I think your country needs you in the bobsleigh Bonny!

BBP - 23-2-2006 at 23:53

It was made in front of a white screen, whilst I was wobbling on a device consisting of 2 planks with a rope between them, that can only slide sideways.

The only attempt I ever made at skating was when I was 8, with skates that were way too big. I didn't even stand on them without aid once, dreadful.

Speaking of skating, did you see women's figure skating? I'm kinda happy the Japanese girl won. Japan's first medal.

scallopino - 24-2-2006 at 05:25

I did, and what is the difference between a sled and a sleigh? Maybe a sleigh has room for a giant red sack.

BBP - 24-2-2006 at 19:12

Sledge (also esp US sled) n a vehicle with long narrow stripes of wood, metal etc instead of wheels, for travelling over ice and snow. Larger types of sledge are pulled by horses or dogs and smaller ones are used for sport or pleasure. Compare SLEIGH, TOBBOGAN

sleigh n a sledge, esp one pulled by a horse

tobbogan n a vehicle for travelling on snow, esp down a slope. It consists of a flat seat attached to two narrow metal or wooden parts that slide easily on snow. Compare SLEDGE.

From: Oxford Advanced Learner's dictionary

scallopino - 25-2-2006 at 12:52

Hmm. So i guess tobbogan is the best term for those olympic things. Or sledge. In australia, sledge is a verb meaning the same thing as insult. This is especially practised to great effect by the australian cricket team!

BBP - 25-2-2006 at 13:39

:D What context would that be? "Don't sledge on me, mate"?

scallopino - 26-2-2006 at 13:12

:-) Sort of. More like, "Don't sledge me, mate" or "Stop sledging me, ya pelican-headed bastard" or some similar thing. It's only really used by the media to describe insults in a sporting context. So we usually see it like:

"AUSSIES TOLD TO TONE DOWN SLEDGING ENGLISH. AGAIN." when describing the cricket.

BBP - 26-2-2006 at 19:49

:bald: Thanx! We don't hear too many Aussies out here... except maybe Steve Irwin (shudder)...

Well, olympics's nearly over... We're celebrating Carnaval out here (the last days before Lent). Exhausting... and cold...

You can keep Steve Irwin. Pleaaase can you keep him? We don't want him, the snakes and crocodiles don't want him etc...

BBP - 28-2-2006 at 18:51

He's advertising a phone company now... bloody annoying.

No we won't take Steve Irwin. We have our own Martin Gaus to be annoyed with.

There is one snake that bit Steve Irwin, so there's still hope (albeit precious little)...
