So, I have a few CDs that ain't Ryko, they're 'Zappa Records'. What's the deal? Are these the original CDs? By the way, my Freak Out! album doesn't
play 15 tracks, only 14 but The Return Of The Son Of Monster Magnet is there mixed in with the 14th track...

The cds on Zappa Records are older cd issues, pressed before Ryko reissued the entire FZ catalogue in 1995. I still have a lot of these, never got
round to upgrading them.
James - 9-11-2005 at 20:49
Why would you upgrade? How much better is the Ryko quality?
Puptent - 9-11-2005 at 20:53
It varies, some of the '95 Ryko cds are remixed, remastered or use different master tapes (like WOIIFTM), some of the original cds were 2-on-1s (like
Apostrophe / Overnite Sensation) and others don't differ at all, except that the Ryko's have better reproductions of the original LP sleeves and extra
artwork.
There's a FAQ somewhere that lists all the differences in great detail.

I was completing my Zappa discography when Ryko took over, which was a good thing because that meant that all the Zappa Recs titles went cheaper, so
was able to finish off my collection, with a few Ryko titles in there, namely WOIIFTM, Apostrophe('), Overnite Sensation and Lumpy Gravy as seperate
titles, plus the as then yet unreleased stuff.....Re sound quality James, some are better than others....The Ryko versions of You Are What You Is,
Tinseltown and Overnite are essential, as they are very nicely cleaned up, so def. worth getting......

Ryko version of YAWYI sounding better? That's new for me. Courrier dissed it in Dangerous Kitchen.
Pappawas1975 - 10-11-2005 at 17:41
Really? Compared to the Zappa Records version, it towers above it IMO....Check here for more input www.lukpac.org/~handmade/patio/vinylvscds/you_are_what_you_is.html#1998
Spencer Chrislu made a point of really brushing this and TR up, but I guess its all a matter of opinion at the end of the day...If people prefer the
original mix, then its fine, its all gravy....

James - 15-11-2005 at 12:26
