Zappadan 2011

BBP - 5-12-2011 at 00:00

In loving memory of the great master, I will start Zappadan again. This time I will be getting another slow start, considering St Nicholas is tomorrow and I still need to write poems and get some awesome presents.

BBP - 5-12-2011 at 12:52

Started the insane gift wrapping (luckily I had started before but I had bought new presents and had the unholy idea of opening one present and wrap up every individual item in it separately) while listening to Freak Out.

I forgot where it was, when Zappa went to promote FO and was only allowed to play one of two songs on his album. One of the choices was ATWB (I'm convinced Freddie Mercury nicked the lyrics for Bohemian Rhapsody), and the other one was Brain Police. Why on earth would they put Prain Police in the top two least offensive songs on the album?
On several songs you can hear Zappa's playing with metre. Obviously this happens on How Could I Be Such A Fool?, where he describes shifting the accent, but also on ATWB and YDTTCM.
The amount of love songs on FO is surprisingly high. Might've been his divorce, who knows, but after Gail steps in his love songs become strongly reduced. We have a lot to thank Gail for.
And there it is, my annual glorification of HCIBSAF. It's in 3/4, the sheet music indicates no accidental at the start of the score, and it starts with a C major triad. Then it kicks in with a 6-drop sequence: C, Em, Bb, Dm, Ab, Cm, Gsus, G, Fm, G, and then starts at C again. So we have a cadenza on C major at the end of the first verse.
After the second one we have the verse, on Em. That would be a III on C major and is a VI on G.
Then comes the bridge You Spoiled Our Love, starting on F, moving to Ab, Gsus, and G. I'd guess the Ab functions as lead to G, which forms a cadenza with the final verse, another Em chorus kickoff that turns Em9 (spicy!), Gmaj7, F#m7, Em7.
There you have a piece that begins in major and ends in minor; unheard of in traditional harmony. Harmony is a pickle.

punknaynowned - 5-12-2011 at 15:24

Bonny!
can I play?
I started backwards. I don't have Carnegie, Monkeys, HO yet, so I started with Greasey Love Songs and then played Congress...
Next up Philly '76!

BBP - 6-12-2011 at 00:39

Sure you can!

I love Hammersmith in spite of the artwork and the free balloon. The opening particularly: "You people are so boring you must be walking in your sleep."
Thanks Frank.

Grabbed TRFZB trying to find the story about Kenny's little creatures on display since he had a bit of an incident. He was supposed to take his wee to the doctor, but when he arrived there it was so busy he went back home and try again next day.
And next day he couldn't find his wee.

He found it back a few days ago: nearly a year since the doctor visit. He was wise enough not to open it and managed to dispose of it. We've rarely been so happy that the garbageman came.

punknaynowned - 6-12-2011 at 15:25

Philly '76: the super funky Tryin To Grow A Chin and City of Tiny Lights are great!! The Torture seems definitively creepy somehow, the guitar tone on Black Napkins and Advance Romance are splendid! Bianca is a real treat, the 200 Motels material a sometimes surprise. Quite a bit of fun and if it were split out as LP sides, three records worth of music!!

Lumpy Money 3, 2, 1: all night long!!! Disc 3 remains a real favorite. The 1984 Lumpy Gravy ties the whole body of zappa's work well in a strange way and the instrumental material from 1967 absolutely indispensable.

Joe's Menage: is a tasty sampler of a tour that should have a wider official distribution. Waterbury, CT, Kansas City, KA, or Lubliana, YU anyone?
anyone?

BB, in english, 'wee' still pretty much means to urinate or could refer to a penis, especially in reference to kids. Like a wee-wee. So I have no idea what your talkin about. But it seems a bit more disturbing than snot on a window.

oh of course, I forgot about the piss jars. How could I? blechh :D

BBP - 7-12-2011 at 11:14

Been shamefully underplaying, I've only had AF, LG and WOIIFTM so far. Get a move on Bon!!

punknaynowned - 7-12-2011 at 22:45

today a long list:
One Shot Deal I like the bread (especially Trudgin') too!
Wazoo always deserves more spins
The Dub Room Special! plastic production imo

BBP - 8-12-2011 at 10:57

Did Ruben (Greasy Love Songs), Uncle Meat and disk 1 of YCDTOSA 5 yesterday. I was playing Uncle Meat disk 2 while working on the Wasgij 18 jigsaw. I almost always use headphones but this time I played it over the stereo... and felt lucky Dad didn't walk in during the 30 minute excerpt.

Boy Uncle Meat hardly sounds like a masterpiece of cinema.

Had fun with the section of Little House on YCDTOSA.
Am going to get a move on today, waste little time. Where's my BWS?

BBP - 8-12-2011 at 11:36

BWS is fantastic!

Also played Hot Rats and Fillmore vinyls and am now listening to the 200 Motels overture which sounds suspiciously like Little House.

Also noticed that, although my Fillmore copy sounds a little faint, it's still a very enjoyable album with plenty mythology, even though the humour is a bit raunchy.

I'm making up for my earlier negligence and have also played Chunga and Just Another Band From LA. Now I have finished the 1000 piece jigsaw, within 24 hours, and am playing Waka Jawaka. and have Grand Wazoo about to run, and hope to play record 9 in the evening. Already through the Flo & Eddie period!

today, in
Buffalo we are presented with 'the real world', courtesy of the mixers, engineers, disc manufacturers and the petrowhizz goo used to make the things this all gets played on. From Oct1980. Great! I just sometimes wish it were a different show from that tour at these high performance production standards.... y'know, maybe even some insane download of flacs covering ALL the vault tapes from 1980, whatever it is... that might be fun. Vinnie's a great drummer. The Keep It Greasy on this one is set at ludicrous speed. Art Barrow? Please. Frank is pretty much 'on' the whole time. Except for Honey Don't.Pick Me I'm Clean, City, Easy Meat, Torture all are great here.

MOFO gets played here but only discs 2-4. Save the other for later... this will continue into the night...

punknaynowned - 8-12-2011 at 23:02

temporal incongruities notwithstanding, I'm gonna fill this whiteboard up later

today the 2nd disc of MOFO (I went backwards, 4,3,2) got listened to, plus the extras on 'fazedooh' that weren't on the 4-disc. It's hard to listen to all of the percussion tracks even though the instrument separation and clarity is great. The instrumental backing tracks for the most part are my favorite of all this on MOFO.

Trance-Fusion is a good break from all the mid-'60's stuff. The more involved technology to get those space-age sounds, end up a refreshing contrast.

Imaginary Diseases once again is a revelation. The improvisation that runs through the first part of DC Boogie is out there!!

BBP - 9-12-2011 at 11:56

Also listened to YCDTOSA vol 1 disk 1 last night. Am now listening to I'm the Slime. I love Slime in any version I've heard it yet.

There's such an enormous break between the fun fun of Flo & Eddie on JABFLA and the calm jazz and totally non-satiric country of Waka/Jawaka. No doubt the Rainbow incident's influence was huge.

That could be, but it could also be just a natural result of Frank wanting to go in a new direction. It was sort of the same situation with Lumpy Gravy and Hot Rats, except there were no near-death experiences involved...

BBP - 10-12-2011 at 11:18

Currently playing Bongo Fury.
Yesterday I had Over-Nite Sensation, Apostrophe('), YCDTOSA vol 2 completely, OSFA, Roxy, YCDTOSA vol 1 disk 2. This is the time I love Zappadan most.

BBP - 10-12-2011 at 15:14

Had Zoot and am now onto the Läther albums. The only Zappa in lifetime I still sort of need is Sleep Dirt with vocals.

Currently I am playing Zappa in New York, which I also listened to on Dec 1st. Gail's quite a photographer.

I almost totally agree. I think if he hadn't been thrown off that stage there would have been at least one more Flo & Eddie album, but he would have gone on to write a lot of alternative music. I mean, he had already written all that music for 200 Motels, while continuing the road life. None the less, the intensity of his writing during that convalescent period is unparalleled.

BBP - 10-12-2011 at 22:38

So today: Bongo Fury, Zoot Allures, ZINY, Sleep Dirt, Orchestral Favourites, Studio Tan, Sheik Yerbouti, and I'll play a YCDTOSA later on. Whoo!

Noticed similarities between Regyptian Strut and Cleetus Awreetus-Awritus.

punknaynowned - 10-12-2011 at 22:50

finishing the Joe series
Joe's XMasage worth it for Why Don'cha Do Me Right
Joe's Domage still a favorite!
Joe's Corsage that mid 60's sound!!!
I skipped Halloween and QuAUDIOPHILIAc for now. I will try to get those in later,,,
FZ:OZ: I actually like the rough prot-version of Kreega Bondola, I mean Let's Move To Cleveland, called Canard Toujours here. Rough and barely serviceable, but there it is.

I better get a move on, I still haven't progressed past this last decade, with over 24 hours of music listened to. I may have to forget the can't do that on stage series and leave it til the week between xmas and new year's. We'll see.

[Edited on 10-12-11 by punknaynowned]

BBP - 11-12-2011 at 12:38

Played YCDTOSA 3 (I love that Honey, Don't You Want A Man Like Me, and it's great to hear Frank lose his cool and crack up over something silly like Hi-ho Silver! I do wonder how it got started.)

Currently listening to Blue Light on TTR, which has a special place in my heart since Dweezil pointed me out at the 2010 Amsterdam concert because I knew the words to it. I also love this Tell Me You Love Me a lot.

BBP - 11-12-2011 at 16:31

Discovered I misplaced my YCDTOSA 2 copy.
Discovered while playing YAWYI (how much does Any Downers sound like Dirty Love?) that I had skipped Joe's Garage.

I played YAWYI and am still busy pinpointing what went wrong. Is it over-compressed and missing too any overtones, giving the tinny sound?

Now listening to: We could jam in Joe's garage...

punknaynowned - 11-12-2011 at 16:34

Everything Is Healing Nicely I play this more than many others. I realized that's because of the T'mershi Duween and Nap Time.
Mystery Disc something I listened to a lot making comps for friends. Now I never hear it complete.
Have I Offended Someone? better Dinah-Mo, different Dumb All Over
Frank Zappa Plays The Music Of Frank Zappa, a memorial tribute such tone, great Zoot Allures
Lost Episodes ditto for Mystery Disc, Sharleena is wonderful

BBP - 11-12-2011 at 21:09

I definitely agree about Dinah-Moe on that. Oddly it does not specify what the difference is between that version and the original.

Had Ship, which I adore, and now I'm playing the Man from Utopia. Cocaine Decisions isn't all that bad and I really like SEX (that guitar sounds more raunchy than the text is, isn't it amazing?), We Are Not Alone and Moggio, but I have better versions of the last two by other bands.
Say is any of you still interested in We Are Not Alone by the Rosa Ensemble? You can find a sample here:
http://www.amazon.com/Wij-Zijn-Niet-Alleen-Alone/dp/B004QF30EI

They als have Klodderige Jus (Lumpy Gravy):

punknaynowned - 11-12-2011 at 23:42

shorter YAWYI: get the EMI or German vinyl, avoid the cd even after '95, though that's not bad; same for Sheik Yerbouti. I didn't make the rules but the sound is always right.

also listened to 1981 11 17 NYC Ritz show with Al DiMeola, another great Italian, then,

Civilization Phaze III "Xmas Values" feels extra creepy today
the extras on Lather not found on the other records: a bit less than 30 minutes worth
The Yellow Shark
Ahead Of Their Time

BBP - 12-12-2011 at 11:01

I got the vinyl for both Sheik and YAWYI.
Played YCDTOSA vol 3 last night which is interesting, hearing the live version of three YAWYI songs on it. They all sound sort of better. Even Cocaine Decisions with the teargas grenades and Zappa switching to Italian sounds better live than on TMFU.

Now playing: Baby Snakes. Jones Crusher! Yay!

BBP - 12-12-2011 at 17:41

London Symphony Orchestra disk 2.
Bogus Pomp contains segments of This Town Is A Sealed Tuna Sandwich. Hey!

AM getting a move on. Went to the second-hand store today and am very happy I did, but it does eat your time.

punknaynowned - 13-12-2011 at 00:28

there are some vinyl versions of YAWYI that sound crappy: thin, compressed, digital reverb, slightly fast. One I had to start was thin, compressed, then somebody gave me a tape with the 'better' version on it, but that sounded 'fast' to me (and it was: the belt on his player was too tight or the motor too fast). I realised this later when I heard the bootleg version of 'Crush All Boxes' that has some YAWYI songs on it at the original speed and production. WOW!! what a difference. Then I got one of the more recent vinyl EMI re-issues ( a German one) and now feel this has got to be the right sound.

Back to the listening.
Playground Psychotics never noticed that the beginning of 'Sleep Dirt' was on 'Don't Eat There'. I always hear more in Billy The Mountain when I play it.
Make A Jazz Noise Here

BBP - 13-12-2011 at 11:43

Fast is no problem for me, I have a variable speed turntable. It's surprising how great the Goblin Girl on Have I Offended Someone? sounds. It's one of the projects ZFT could and should really do: the final proper YAWYI release. There's some other points where I had that. Heard of the Sheik Yerbouti CD having a bad edit. And Burnt Weeny Sandwich has a bad edit in the piano intro which is inexcusable.

Also played Perfect Stranger, Thing-Fish and YCDTOSA vol 4 disk 1. Vol 4 disk 1, with Cleveland, Torture, the perfect Evil Prince and many others, is my favourite disk of the 12. But now I'm noticing the first signs of fatigue: not Cocaine Decisions again!

Playing FZ meets MOP. I really like Little Beige Sambo.

BBP - 13-12-2011 at 18:09

Forgot Weasels, which I played today, along with Francesco and DHBIM. I really like DHBIM, some great Cleveland solos and Whippin' Post is a delight. Am about to move on to Monkies.

punknaynowned - 13-12-2011 at 21:01

it occurred to me that we've reached the midpoint between dec4 - dec21

overnight I listened to
The Best Band and
Guitar and
Broadway The Hard Way
today's list
LSO 2
Jazz From Hell

BBP - 13-12-2011 at 22:56

We meet half-way! Today I did MOP, Weasels, Francesco, DHBIM, Jazz from Hell, Them or Us, and will play YCDTOSA 4/2, with all the blueses.

Shut Up & Play Your Guitar now. Accidentally I began with the 3rd CD, which is the best of course (Canard du Jour).

BBP - 14-12-2011 at 15:33

Broadway the Hard Way. Planet of the Baritone Women.

I remember you stating your displeasure Bonny with this song, so I listened carefully to the words again this time and looked them up and am now of the opinion that the 'baritone women' are actually men who in Frank's opinion act like 'women' because of the job they have to/had to do.

BBP - 14-12-2011 at 23:07

Hmmm. I tend to relate it to Frank's anti-feminism stance which is displayed in extremis on Thing-Fish.
Granted, that one feminist subject I attended briefly was beyond stupid.

no, not just rhythm but notes, but only just the beginning. I went and looked it up at IINK.
These people think so too.
The bit on Don't Eat There sounds more like the beginning of this than the (properly mic'ed) studio version.

A couple years ago I started looking and finding these sorts of quotes but then somebody called out the dogs and they went crazy on it, making sure every two or three notes of anything was recognized and annotated. So many things they found and looked up. I sure didn't have to. Testament to the internet, I guess and a lotta great ears and knowledge. Lots of jazz heads are zappa freaks, for example. Wiki-Jawaka and IINK cross-referenced themselves with the rest of the zappateers and there is so much info now in just a few short years.

I don't think Frank's anti-feminist, not even on Thing-Fish. Rhonda's a terrible feminist anyway. Most of the criticism in the whole thing is aimed at the 'critical' audience and in particular, the protagonist, Harry. The overeducated shithead. Don't you think?
Central characters learn or do something in the course of a plot. Thing-Fish doesn't learn a thing, he's the narrator.
Harry learns that he's a gay overeducated shithead with a fondness for whatever it is he likes.
Rhonda is the real hero, I think of the story. She learns a lot and tells Harry she fucks her briefcase as a symbol, rather than him, because he doesn't deserve it. She's happy to go off and find her own satisfaction without the shackles of her previous life holding her back. Meanwhile Harry is a putz and succumbs to his own selfishness, seeing only shame in Rhonda's newfound liberation. She's the hero. and Harry and his choices are the reason that she goes off with her briefcase and fountain pen.

Tonight it's Them Or Us

BBP - 15-12-2011 at 11:29

Maybe it's Dale's horrible acting.
Anyway now that Dad knows what stuff I'm listening to... ehm...

Also played the 1st vinyl of Guitar yesterday, and YCDTOSA 5/2. I love Cleveland on it, but Tiny Lights is awful. Now I'm listening to MOI Ahead Of Their Time.

How would you define Frank's accent? Really noticeable things about it is how he pronounces own ("ohn") and how he pronounces his "eye" with extra accent on the last part of the sound. On Yellow Shark you can hear him talk about "fayyyyn" musicians.

punknaynowned - 15-12-2011 at 12:15

Thing-Fish *is* a messed up story by anybody's measure. Frank delighted in messing with people's boundaries, on purpose. Goes with the territory. Not what I was wanting to do. But even beyond the music, he went to extremes in subject matter to get people's attention, make them laugh and I think maybe think a little.
Frank doesn't really have an accent I'd say. But sarcastic, especially on record. He does 'voices' to an extent. Not like an impersonator but for emphasis. He tries to elicit a response. Inflection conveys so much. Why dutch, german, chinese, japanese is intimidating to me.

The Perfect Stranger
LSO 1

BBP - 15-12-2011 at 20:11

Today: Ahead Of Their Time, Playground Psychotics (on now: Shoop shoop!), Guitar, and later tonight YCDTOSA CD 6 vol 2. I'll have to play CD1 on my computer because it's too scratched.

punknaynowned - 16-12-2011 at 10:01

So right, it's Friday already and this has seemed a long week but lots got done despite the 'seasonal' cheers,,,
tonight (my thursday) listened to
Baby Snakes - I never listen to this on it's own as I'd rather put on the dvd
The Man From Utopia - still a favorite. I like to play Cocaine Decisions at parties, and the Tink/Radio/We Are Not Alone sequence is something I've put on loop, coupled with all the rehearsals of that sort of thing (aka Eleven, Thirteen) and played that over and over, good times; and Luigi and the wise guys? Come on! Gorgeous Folk Music! hahahaha
Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch I ome From Nowhere, No Not Now
You Are What You Is - best I Don't Want To Get Drafted, especially the outro; If Only She Woulda is a perennial favorite, fits nice in a vase with cut flowers, a polka for the suburbs;
Return of ... Shut Up ... Some More - much renewed appreciation of often overlooked gems here, like Why Johnny Can't Read, Canarsie, Pink Napkins, While You Were Out

later this friday morn I'll get to Tinseltown Rebellion

BBP - 16-12-2011 at 11:09

So yesterday I did YCDTOSA 6 disk 1, and Trance-Fusion to top things off. Now playing Make A Jazz Noise Here.
...need.... more... Zappa....

BBP - 16-12-2011 at 16:54

Only have Yellow Shark and CP3 left now... Tried to play Halloween but it won't work on my laptop.

BBP - 18-12-2011 at 12:54

Played Yellow Shark and Imaginary Diseases yesterday. Am now listening to Zappa Wazoo.

polydigm - 18-12-2011 at 14:04

Having dissected that so called Sleep Dirt section on Don't Eat There I'm willing to accept it's the germ of the piece. It's no where near the kind of revelation associated with years of listening to Bwana Dik then getting Lumpy Gravy and listening to both for many more years after that before finally realising the main middle section of Bwana Dik is a completely revamped Doudenum.

BBP - 18-12-2011 at 16:27

Last year Zappadan marked the passing of Captain Beefheart. This year, while Motorhead is hopefully still breathing, the world's greatest Zappa-fan, Vaclav Havel, is lost.

BBP - 18-12-2011 at 17:12

Hmm... I hear some continuity between Billy The Mountain and Penis Dimension.

punknaynowned - 18-12-2011 at 18:59

polydigm - you got me there!

last night an old friend showed up and I just let the zappa play and play
Joe's Garage
Orchestral Favorites
Shiek Yerbouti
Sleep Dirt
Studio Tan
Zappa In New York
Zoot Allures
Bongo Fury

BBP - 19-12-2011 at 11:06

Yesterday I played Wazoo, Humour DVD and the first Hammersmith disk, am now playing disk 2. I played Hammersmith fairly recently, when I made the alternative cover.
"You're so boring you must be walking in your sleep!"

BBP - 20-12-2011 at 12:20

Played disk 3 of Hammersmith yesterday and am thinking of checking out some DVDs before I'll tackle CP3.

BBP - 20-12-2011 at 13:04

Happy Birthday Frank!!

BBP - 20-12-2011 at 22:38

Now playing: Token Of His Extreme DVD.
Why? Halloween doesn't work on my computer, and nor does Dub Room Special. Token is definitely not a DVD to watch, with a complete disregard towards epileptic Zappa-fans, but it's running in the background while I type on my writings.

punknaynowned - 21-12-2011 at 15:05

the other day,
One Size Fits All
and O-S, YCTDTOSA 2, A('), too
but I have not had the time to sit down and finish this like I thought.
But I got pretty close.
I like the lettering of your stylized leaflet Bonny.^
There's another version of my guitar that's different from the official releases and the clips on youtube that you should hear. late '76, early '77. More tension. The halloween '76 version has Bianca too.

BBP - 21-12-2011 at 21:41

Yeah it's more than you think! I remember the first time, when I had like four days left to play all those double albums... that really gets you nuts.
Last night I played Lost Episodes, today I watched 200 Motels and will play CP3 this evening. Yesterday I was so mixed up I thought it was the 21st already.

punknaynowned - 21-12-2011 at 23:10

yeah, I thought I was doing well having listened to the last 20 releases in a week because they are big multi-disc sets. But this last week time has got away from me. It's more than just setting time aside. I found I had to take breaks for other music and ... silence!
At least I listened to a lot of it and paid attention to all of it except the last big session.
This year my favorite in all of it? Black Napkins on Make A Jazz Noise.
