HERR | The Winter Of Constantinople

Steeped in tragedy and legionary heroism, this musical odyssey recreates the penultimate 1453 siege of the Byzantine capital beside the shimmering waters of the Bosphorus. A neo-classical cocktail of atmospheric keyboards, cello and pounding drums frolic alongside militaristic anthems about European imperium, hooliganism as modern warfare, vanquished heroes, Turkish hordes, architectural majesty and defiant optimism. The diverse lyrical styles and sheer breadth of instrumentation on this release make it one of the most original and captivating albums of the last few years.

Pappawas1975 - 11-11-2005 at 09:23

Ive just noticed that by including the album covers and blurbs that I must come across as a proper nerd...Apologies...

Puptent - 11-11-2005 at 10:53

Nah, keep the descriptions coming. I like to read that kind of stuff and I'm a record nerd myself. That first album is on Tzadik, I guess?

Gonna pick up some new albums tomorrow, last week I bought 'Where's Brooklyn?' by Don Cherry.

Pappawas1975 - 11-11-2005 at 17:25

Yeah, its on Tzadik....Loads of great stuff on that label, but alot of crap too.....Re Don Cherry, the only album I have by him is with John Coltrane, called "The Avant Garde"....Fucking good though....

BBP - 11-11-2005 at 19:04

... I think I left out my Saint-Saens box...
Has all 5 symphonies (2 unpublished ones), all 5 piano concertos, three violin concertos and several orchestral pieces (like my fave, Africa).

On the night of 29th November 2001, as part of the STIGMA 2001 FESTIVAL in London, COLD SPRING had a night of their bands playing. "Sanhedrin" is indeed excellent as well. There are so many Masada albums out there that some of it can sound all the same, but this one does sound great, kinda laid-back even.

Pappawas1975 - 10-12-2005 at 22:27

I agree....The trick is to not listen to any Masada project for a long while, then stick one on....Keep meaning to pick up Sanhedrin, but its pricey....Ive heard the new Electric Masada release is great also.....

Pappawas1975 - 10-12-2005 at 22:36

OK, OK, I know its a bootleg! But it was very reasonably priced and I may well be dead before the ZFT get round to putting anything new out.......

BBP - 10-12-2005 at 23:14

Looks good... How's the sound?

Pappawas1975 - 10-12-2005 at 23:24

Its in the mail, havent received it yet, but judging by the internet broadcast of it on killuglyradio.com, its pretty good....

BBP - 10-12-2005 at 23:30

They have it online? Great!

Pappawas1975 - 10-12-2005 at 23:30

Well, not exactly! E-bay anyway....

BBP - 10-12-2005 at 23:32

One of them 30sec samples then...? I stopped doing bootlegs after I got one that sounded like a forest-fire. It was called Trick Or Treat.

Pappawas1975 - 10-12-2005 at 23:36

If I hadnt heard this before, I wouldnt have bought it, Ive been burnt by bootlegs since Beat The Boots. Some of those were great, and other titles in that series were just a waste of time and money.....The version of Resolver/Brutality I heard featured the tracks in their entirity...

BBP - 10-12-2005 at 23:44

A friend of mine has Beat the Boots... It's great to know people who have a more advanced collection...
Either way, I don't buy bootlegs anymore, but I do get 'em for free sometimes... Once I got these neat rehearsal-tapes on CD...

Pappawas1975 - 10-12-2005 at 23:51

Yeah, sometimes they are a winner, and other not.....Thats the risk you take I guess....Golden Rule? - Try before you buy! ( if you can )...

BBP - 10-12-2005 at 23:59

That's always a golden rule, well, for CD's anyway. Though I never listen to them in the store. Which resulted in me buying a Lisa Loeb-album.

Pappawas1975 - 11-12-2005 at 00:01

I would conclude that that particular purchase was a mistake?

BBP - 11-12-2005 at 00:06

Yeah I wondered what she sounds like... an example of overenthusiastic Dweezil-fanhood (which has magically cured in the past three months).
I really began to regret that purchase (Firecracker) when I opened the CD-box and saw how pink it was...
Either way I gave it to my mother. Our taste in music hardly corresponds, but she didn't like it either.

Pappawas1975 - 11-12-2005 at 00:09

She had a big hit over here, cant remember the song, You Say or something, but just by that song I could tell that I wouldnt be able to dig her albums.....Good for what it was, just not my bag, yknow?

BBP - 11-12-2005 at 00:17

I Do. It was on Firecracker, the only number 1 hit in the States ever by an unsigned artist. It also appeared on an episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

It's worth every penny, though.. the packaging is great, and the music too.

I grabbed Resolver + Brutality from the Zappateers tracker in lossless FLAC format. Why pay for bootlegs in 2005 when you can get the same stuff for free. well, I guess silver discs and printed artwork are pretty cool, though.

Frank Zappa played the original version of Handsome Cabin Boy on USA Radio. Sung to ease the back-breaking work and fill up the long lonely nights with rowdy and profane entertainment. The booklet contains all the liner notes from the original mono LP which covers the history of the songs and the singers. Frank said (see notes - The Lost Episodes): 'When everyone else was listening to Cream I was listening to A. L. Loyd & Ewan MacColl. These were two old guys who used to record together, trying to replicate the original instrumentation of sea shanties. Some of the words were absolutely unbelieveable...I loaned the LP to Beefheart and he probably still has it'. Sonically cleaned and diigitally remastered

My favourite track has to be the Barbershop quartet... I didn't really like the first few dancy sing-alongable tracks, and the last few tracks were too much for me as well... Aren't they supposed to be the missing link between Zappa and Primus?

Hope it gets better with listening more and more to it...

Pappawas1975 - 11-3-2006 at 19:54

It will grow on you BB, just like their other 80s records, at first I thought " What is this all about?", but I got there in the end. Then again, I am a drummer, and Bill Bruford is on them, so it maybe was easier to dig quicker....!!!!

aquagoat - 15-3-2006 at 09:46

I agree with Gojira, this album will grow on you but not as much as Red or Lars tongue, there's always that kind of 80's pop tinge that's a bit boring. Does Discipline sound the same ? I've always wanted to buy it but never dared to cause of the period during which it was released.

For what it's worth, I like Discipline a lot better. It does have the same '80s production qualities' (you know, lots of that gated reverb 'Phil Collins' snare sound), but the tunes are a lot less poppier and more challenging.

aquagoat - 15-3-2006 at 20:21

Thanks for the short review, puptent, I think I'm gonna get it soon.

aquagoat - 16-3-2006 at 08:54

Hey BBP, if you're interested in improving your bass skills, I'v got scores of KC's "Three of a perfect pair". The bass part is not very difficult but the guitar parts are, its good for you hand dexterity. Give me a sign if you're interested. I've also got scores for "Vrooom", if any KC fan wants to have a look at it.:-)

Puptent - 16-3-2006 at 11:28

I spent a lot of time practicing the crosspicking patterns in "Fracture" (from the Starless and Bible Black album), that stuff is pretty tough as well, but a great workout for your right hand.

Yes, if you practice it seriously you can only progress. I usually use the beginning of "Three of..." as a warm up exercise. It's good for your right hand precision and left hand dexterity.
