ZPZ guest wishlist

scallopino - 17-2-2009 at 04:46

So far there has been Steve Vai, Nappy, Bozzio and Ray White. When I saw them in Melbourne in November 07 it was Vai and Ray White. It looks like it's going to be Ray again in 2009. As much as I love Ray White, I would love to see someone else this year.

Who would you like to see? Who are real possibilities? Who, for various reasons, will never even be considered by Dweezil and Co?

I would love to see Ike Willis, George Duke, Chad Wackerman and, possibly more than anyone else, RUTH! I don't know the relationship status between the ZFT and these people (although Ruth featured in the 'Classic Albums' program).

BBP - 17-2-2009 at 15:55

I'd love to see Ruth! Although ZPZ has a great percussionist in Billy Hulting. I know that Ruth actually went to ZPZ rehearsals even before their first tour. Ruth was amazed at Billy's ability to play with 4 mallets, and Billy was amazed at Ruth's ability to play all that complicated material with only 2 mallets!

For non-FZ-related guest stars... well... I'd love to see Les Claypool with them, that YouTube vid is to drool over. And I'd love to hear Tim Curry sing Yo Cats.

scallopino - 18-2-2009 at 04:01

Yeah, Billy is extremely great. He doesn't quite have the physique to pull off that superhero costume Ed Mann wore though. Which video with Les Claypool are you drooling over?

I have a question: Napoleon was involved with Project/Object, so how did he come to play with ZPZ?

Another very in-form and excellent guest would be Mike Keneally.

Les has that Whamola there... I believe a fan built it for him. He sure mastered it!

Not sure about Napi... maybe he just asked and the Zappas didn't know... but he's now been forbidden to perform any Zappa tune.

punknaynowned - 18-2-2009 at 22:00

or they asked him.
I don't remember where I read this but I heard NMB asked for more money and they said no. So he said, see ya.

scallopino - 19-2-2009 at 03:44

NMB asked ZPZ for more money?

Huck_Phlem - 22-2-2009 at 18:49

I'd like to see George Duke.

BBP - 22-2-2009 at 20:30

Yeah! It'd be great to hear him sing Inca Roads... Belew brought shivers down my spine with Lites... and Napi with Florentine Pogen... it's just so right hearing them sing their own songs!

MTF - 23-2-2009 at 07:48

I don't think George Duke will ever play with ZPZ. They'd have to work it out with his manager: Herb Cohen.

MTF - 24-2-2009 at 05:19

You can scratch Roy Estrada off the list too...

scallopino - 24-2-2009 at 06:11

Man I would love to see Belew with them. I don't know what has happened between him and the ZFT since that fiasco with road manager guy or whatever it was.

You say that, MTF, but if you cast your mind back to the first ZPZ tour, George was due to do it, even to the point of having dates put aside for ZPZ on his tour dates page on his official site....

So, stranger things have happened!

I would love to see Ike WIllis, of course.

Huck_Phlem - 28-2-2009 at 06:39

I think it stinks that Adrian was put into that position period!

Wow! I didn't know that. Does anyone know what happened? Obviously it can't have been that he couldn't do the dates...

Sucking up? Adrian?
No, his letter really was one of peacemaking. Very sweet.

since I'm on this train of thought, I would like to clear up one more thing.
a few months back I was asked by dweezil zappa to join the zappa plays zappa
show in canada for an onstage performance of flakes, the dylan imitation.
in an email to me dweezil also asked that I make certain
andre cholmondeley, my tour manager and guitar tech,
would be persona non grata.
in other words dweezil did not want to see andre at the show.
there is an ongoing battle between the zappa family and andre.

I told dweezil I would try my best to insure he would not see andre.
but I put it off and put it off and I want to make this clear:
I did not say anything to andre.
andre had no idea that he should keep out of dweezil's sight.

why did I not keep my word to dweezil?
andre is a valued member of my crew and a friend.
I know how much he loves frank's music.
I could not bring myself to hurt andre's feeling.

naturally, the worst happened.
andre was banished from watching the show
by one of the zappa crew members
and things got a bit ugly.

I want to apologize to both andre and dweezil.
I should have told andre or should never have
given my word in the first place.

on a happier note:
when I walked onstage to sit in with zappa plays zappa
armed with only a harmonica and my pitiful dylan voice,
I suddenly felt transported back to my time onstage with frank.
dweezil so resembles his father in looks and in voice
that I had to do a double take to be sure where I was.

it was a very special moment for me
which brought back a flood of memories.

I miss frank.

scallopino - 2-3-2009 at 12:39

Excellent! Actually, he doesn't suck up to anyone and makes it clear he wasn't on anyone's side, just caught in the middle.

BBP - 28-3-2009 at 08:07

Aaron Arntz has quit ZPZ to pursue his own career.

I'm a bit gutted about it as I'm an Aaron fan, but it does make room for another guest. Rumours are that Chick Corea will play with them.

Thing is, I have an April 2006 recording of the first public performance of ZPZ; with Chick Corea; and that wasn't too stellar, that performance.

MTF - 28-3-2009 at 21:13

Chick is booked up with The Five Peace Band until at least the beginning of May.

Dweezil has known about Aaron's departure since December. He certainly has a plan for how to deal with this. In the short term, the plan is probably just to close ranks and move on.

Don't worry Bonny. By the time they get to Eindhoven, you probably won't be able to tell that one of them is missing...

BBP - 29-3-2009 at 18:40

Let's hope so...

They need to get it right before that! They're in Melbourne in 16 days! God, it's such a shame. I wish Aaron had stuck around untiil the end of the tour at least, or made his feelings clear earlier. Dweezil says on the ZPZ blog that it would take four months of rehearsing a new keyboardist to get it up to scratch.

I really hope the setlist doesn't suffer.

BBP - 31-3-2009 at 07:30

It will, from what I've heard. No G-Spot Tornado this time.

MTF - 1-4-2009 at 04:44

Probably no Peaches En Regalia either. Aaron played his ass off on that one.

BBP - 1-4-2009 at 09:59

Oh darn! Their Grammy-winner!

Well... April Fools now... can't help but hoping Aaron jumps up from behind a closet shouting that...

scallopino - 1-4-2009 at 11:00

:-(

BBP - 1-4-2009 at 15:32

Aww... (hugs Scallop) That smiley really looks so sad, I can't get over it...

BBP - 2-4-2009 at 09:37

And there's more bad news: Ray White's quit too...

scallopino - 2-4-2009 at 14:15

:(:(:(

Bloody hell. What's going on? I thought it would be in their contracts that they couldn't walk out mid tour. This is so terrible.

BBP - 2-4-2009 at 18:23

Aaron didn't walk out mid-tour, he already announced his departure in December to DZ. I'm annoyed that this wasn't announced earlier. He is not going to Japan and Australia for budget reasons.

White did suddenly walk out by leaving a mail in DZ's inbox. I wonder what's going on there...

scallopino - 3-4-2009 at 16:22

I'm going to go with your april fools idea for Ray White. It seems like a very strange thing to do.

BBP - 4-4-2009 at 12:28

We haven't heard any counter-stories yet though...

scallopino - 5-4-2009 at 12:22

Oh well. I've lightened up a little bit in the last few days. At least it will be very different from the last time they were here.

BBP - 5-4-2009 at 16:28

That's true enough!

punknaynowned - 18-4-2009 at 04:29

BBP - 19-4-2009 at 17:16

Yeah I knew! Unica told me! Would be fun if I could make that... Will be quite the Zappa year!
